Saskatchewan Seeding Lunges Forward

REGINA - Jun 1/17 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's crops surged forward during the past week, with 91% of all crops planted, which Saskatchewan Agriculture says is in line with the recent five year average.

Seeding is most advanced in the southeast, where producers have 95% of the crop in the ground, compared to 94% is seeded in the southwest; 80% in the west-central region; 79% in the east-central region; 76% in the northwest and 43% in the northeast.

Seeding of pulses is starting to wind down, with 96% of this year's intended lentil area already in the ground, compared to 95% of the field peas, 91% of the soybeans, 71% of the canaryseed, 94% of the chickpeas, and 78% of the mustard seed. Seeding of other crops is now 92% complete for durum, 81% for spring wheat, 80% for flax, 76% for canola and 73% for barley.

Growers in northern crop districts face a more difficult time, with many fields still too wet ti support machinery. By contrast, farmers in the south are starting complain that they need rain to help with crop germination.

Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 11% surplus, 75% adequate, 12% short and 2% very short.
