Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 23/17 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
An upper-level trough extends from the northwest of the state towards the central coast. A new upper trough will move into southern Queensland today, while a more significant feature begins to amplify over New South Wales on Saturday and moves into southeast Queensland on Sunday. A weak surface trough lies over the west, and moves into the central interior over the weekend. A belt of high pressure extends across southern Australia and will maintain ridging over the east coast during the the coming days.
Forecast for the rest of FridayA high to very high chance of showers and storms over the Peninsula. The moderate to high chance of showers and possible storms over remaining northwestern parts, with the slight chance of a shower or storm elsewhere in parts of western Queensland. A slight to moderate chance of showers about the remaining east coast north of about Fraser Island. Mostly fine in the southeast of the state with only the slight chance of a shower or storm about the Granite Belt. Fine and and mostly sunny elsewhere, with above average temperatures expected through the southern interior. Winds light to moderate east to southeasterly, fresh and gusty south to southeasterly in the west.Fire Danger -  Very high in the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Maranoa and Warrego and Wide Bay and Burnett districts.Saturday 25 FebruaryAn upper trough is likely to move north and east over the south of the state on Saturday, with the chance of a shower or storm near the surface trough over the southern interior. A high to very high chance of showers and storms over the Peninsula, with the slight to moderate chance of a shower or storm over the northern interior. The slight to moderate chance of a shower about the east coast. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Temperatures will be near or above average for much of the state, particularly over the southern interior.Sunday 26 FebruaryA new upper trough amplifies over southeast Queensland. The surface trough remains slow moving over the interior while the ridge of high pressure strengthens along the east coast. A medium to high chance of showers and storms near the surface trough east of about Quilpie, with the chance of thunderstorms decreasing near the coast. A medium to high chance of showers and storms exists once more in the northern tropics and Gulf Country, more likely about the northern Peninsula, but with mostly fine conditions expected in parts of the northern interior. A slight to moderate chance of showers and storms through inland parts elsewhere. A mostly high chance of showers about the east coast, with possible storms about the North Tropical Coast.Monday 27 FebruaryThe upper trough remains slow moving over the southeast quarter of the state, while the surface trough moves into western Queensland in response to the strengthening ridge. A slight to moderate chance of showers and storms across much of the interior of the state. The northern tropics will remain active, with a high to very high chance of showers and storms about the Peninsula. A high chance of showers about the entire eastern coast of Queensland in the moist onshore wind regime. Fine and sunny in the far southwest of the state.Tuesday until ThursdayA high in the Tasman Sea will maintain a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast with showers persisting in an onshore wind flow. Showers and storms will continue over the north of the state through the outlook period. The surface trough over the western interior of the state will likely shift west during the outlook, entering the Northern Territory by Wednesday. The upper trough over southern Queensland will shift northwards through the outlook period with a medium to high chance of showers and storms for much of eastern Queensland.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Friday.Product IDQ10700
