MELBOURNE - Feb 23/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation Ex-Tropical Cyclone Marcia lies offshore of the southeast Queensland coast and is expected to shift north into the central Coral Sea during the forecast period, remaining well offshore of the east Queensland coast. A moist and unstable airmass will extend over the northern half of the state during the forecast period. An upper level trough will shift north over southern Queensland on Tuesday and through central Queensland into the tropics during Wednesday. Forecast for the rest of MondayA medium to high chance of showers and gusty storms through northern and central parts. Some storms will likely be severe, particularly through central districts north of about St Lawrence. A slight to medium chance of showers over the southeastern corner of the state. Fine and mostly clear in the southwest. Light to moderate northwest to northeasterly winds over the northern half of the state, tending southeast to southwesterly in the south. Strong southerly winds near the southern coast. Powerful surf about the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast exposed beaches.Tuesday 24 FebruaryA medium to high chance of showers and storms over northern districts, particularly over inland parts. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms over central districts and the southeastern corner of the state. Fine and mostly sunny conditions in the southwest and southern interior with only a slight chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms near the New South Wales border. Hot conditions through the central west and also the southwest of the state. Light to moderate northwest to northeasterly winds over the northern half of the state. Moderate to fresh south to southeasterly winds in the south, strong near the southern coast. Powerful surf easing about the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast exposed beaches.Fire Danger - Very High in the Warrego.Wednesday 25 FebruaryAn upper level trough will continue tracking north towards the tropics. This will greatly increase instability through the tropics and combine with an increasingly moist airmass to lead to a high chance of showers and storms, particularly between Townsville and Cooktown. Some locally heavy falls are likely with storms. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms will persist through central districts and into the southeast of the state. Fine and hot conditions will continue in the southwest.Thursday 26 FebruaryThe upper trough in the tropics should continue moving north, contracting the heavy shower and storm activity into the Peninsula. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms will persist through the remaining tropics. An upper trough may also generate some isolated showers and storms over the southeastern corner of the state, particularly inland parts. The southern and central interior should remain mostly fine and mostly sunny. Temperatures will remain several degrees above average trough the southwest and southern interior.Friday 27 FebruaryThe upper trough should lie through the far northern tropics with further heavy showers and storms expected over the far north of Cape York Peninsula. Onshore winds should bring a slight to medium chance of showers along much of the east coast. A surface trough is expected to lie though the interior of the state from around Mt Isa to Cunnamulla with a medium chance of showers and storms to the north and east of the trough, mainly in the northern tropics. Temperatures will remain several degrees above average trough the southwest and the central and southern interior.Saturday until MondayThe surface trough will remain slow moving over the interior of the state during the outlook period whilst a weak ridge should persist along the east coast. This will lead to a slight to medium chance of showers and storms through northern, central and southeastern districts.
