Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 22/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Marcia lies offshore of the southeast Queensland coast and is expected to shift north northeast into the central Coral Sea during the forecast period, remaining well offshore of the east Queensland coast. A moist and unstable airmass will extend over the northern half of the state during the forecast period. An upper level trough will shift north over southern Queensland on Tuesday and through central Queensland into the tropics during Wednesday.
Forecast for the rest of MondayA medium to high chance of showers and gusty storms through northern and central parts. Some storms will likely be severe, particularly through central districts north of about St Lawrence. A slight to medium chance of showers over the southeastern corner of the state. Fine and mostly sunny in the southwest. A hot to very hot day over the central interior. Light to moderate northwest to northeasterly winds over the northern half of the state, tending southeast to southwesterly in the south. Strong southerly winds near the southern coast. Powerful surf about Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast exposed beaches.Fire Danger - Very High in the Maranoa and Warrego district.Tuesday 24 FebruaryA medium to high chance of showers and storms will persist over northern districts, particularly inland parts. An upper level trough will move north into southern Queensland, resulting in a slight to medium chance of showers and storms over central districts and into the southeastern corner of the state. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will persist in the southwest. Hot conditions will continue through the central west and also extend to the southwest of the state.Wednesday 25 FebruaryThe upper level trough will continue tracking north towards the tropics. This will greatly increase instability through the tropics and combine with an increasingly moist airmass to lead to a high chance of showers and storms, particularly between Townsville and Cooktown. Some locally heavy falls are likely with storms. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms will persist through central districts and into the southeast of the state. Fine and hot conditions will continue in the southwest.Thursday 26 FebruaryThe upper trough in the tropics should continue moving north, contracting the heavy shower and storm activity into the Peninsula. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms will persist through the remaining tropics. An upper trough may also generate some isolated showers and storms over the southeastern corner of the state, particularly inland parts. The southern and central interior should remain mostly fine and mostly sunny.Friday until SundayA trough will most likely extend through the interior of the state during the outlook period. This will lead to a slight to medium chance of showers and storms through northern, central and southeastern districts with fine conditions persisting in the southwest. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Monday.Product IDQ10700
