Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 18/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A monsoon trough extends from tropical cyclone Lam, across northern Cape York Peninsula, to a tropical low well off the Queensland coast over the Coral Sea. A high pressure system will remain near New Zealand over the next few days, maintaining a firm ridge over the southern and central east coast. The low in the Coral Sea will move southwest and is expected to cross the Capricornia or Wide Bay coast early on Friday morning as a tropical cyclone.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayShowers, isolated thunderstorms and areas of rain over the northern reaches of Cape York Peninsula. The slight to medium chance of showers over the remaining eastern districts in an onshore flow, increasing to areas of rain about the Central Coast and Wide Bay coast late this evening. Some showers and storms in the southwest of the state but with little if any rainfall. A large and powerful easterly swell developing south of about Gladstone. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds, strong about the east coast south of Mackay.Thursday 19 FebruaryRain areas and possible storms will develop over the eastern coastal districts between about Bowen and the Gold Coast with heavy falls likely. Thunderstorms may produce destructive wind gusts between St Lawrence and Hervey Bay for coastal and Island communities from Thursday morning, with locally damaging wind gusts possible south of Hervey Bay. Dangerous surf and abnormally high tides will also develop along exposed beaches south of about Gladstone. A medium to high chance of showers and storms over the remainder of the eastern districts, with a slight to medium chance extending into the central interior. Much of the west should remain fine apart from the chance of showers or storms over the southern and southwestern interior. A medium chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds, strong about the east coast south of Mackay, with gales developing about the Capricornia waters during the afternoon. Gales are expected to develop between St Lawrence and Double Island Point for coastal and island communities on Thursday evening depending on the movement and develop of the tropical low.Friday 20 FebruaryA medium to high chance of showers and storms over far northern districts and also over most of the eastern half of the state as an upper trough approaches from the west. The Coral Sea low is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone and cross the Capricornia or Wide Bay coast during the early morning. A strong surface trough extending southwards from the low or cyclone is likely to move across the state's southeast, producing heavy rain, damaging winds, showers and storms over the southeast districts, and dangerous swells and abnormally high tides about the coast south of about Gladstone.Saturday 21 FebruaryThere is uncertainty in the forecast from Saturday due to uncertainty in the movement of the low or cyclone. Showers and storms may persist in the far north of the state. Rain areas may also persist over the state's southeast on Saturday, but it is more likely that the rain will be easing to showers. Some showers are also expected over the remainder of the eastern districts in a weak onshore flow, and showers and storms over the far north of the state in a humid airmass. The west should remain mostly fine.Sunday 22 FebruaryThere is significant uncertainty in the forecast for Sunday. A low or trough may lie over the base of the Top End of the Northern Territory, possibly causing showers and storms over Queensland's northwest on Sunday and early in the new week. A band of showers and storms may extend from the northwest down across the central interior and eastern districts towards the southeast of the state.Monday until WednesdayThere is a high level of uncertainty in the forecast from Monday onwards. A band of showers and storms may extend from the northwest down across the central interior and eastern districts towards the southeast of the state, with fine and mostly sunny conditions over the far southwest.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Thursday.Product IDQ10700
