Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 17/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
Tropical cyclone Lam lies over the northern parts of the Gulf of Carpentaria and is expected to move west into the Northern Territory. A monsoon trough extends from tropical cyclone Lam, across northern Cape York Peninsula, to a tropical low well off the Queensland coast over the Coral Sea. A high pressure system will remain near New Zealand over the next few days, maintaining a firm ridge over the southern and central east coast. The low in the Coral Sea is expected to shift southwest over the southern Coral Sea during the next few days and is likely to cross the Capricornia or Wide Bay coast late in the week.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayShowers, storms and areas of rain over the northern reaches of Cape York Peninsula. The slight to medium chance of showers over the remaining eastern districts in an onshore flow, increasing to areas of rain about the Central Coast and Wide Bay coast late in the day. Some showers and storms in the southwest of the state but with little if any rainfall. A large and powerful easterly swell developing south of about Gladstone. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds, strong about the east coast south of Mackay.Fire Danger -  Very high about the southwest Darling Downs and Granite Belt district.Thursday 19 FebruaryThe low over the southern Coral Sea is likely to continue moving towards the Capricornia or Wide Bay coast, and a strong trough will extend south of the low and onto Queensland's southeast coast. Rain areas and possible storms will develop over the east coast districts between about Bowen and the Gold Coast with heavy falls likely and damaging wind gusts possible. Dangerous surf and abnormally high tides will also develop along exposed beaches south of about Gladstone. A medium to high chance of showers and storms over the remainder of the eastern districts, with a slight to medium chance extending into the central interior. Much of the west should remain fine apart from the chance of showers or storms persisting in the southwest.Friday 20 FebruaryA medium to high chance of showers and storms over far northern districts and also over most of the eastern half of the state as an upper trough approaches from the west. The Coral Sea low is likely to cross the Capricornia or Wide Bay coast during the day. A strong surface trough extending southwards from the low is likely to move across the state's southeast, producing heavy rain, damaging winds, showers and storms over the southeast districts, and dangerous swells and abnormally high tides about the coast south of about Gladstone.Saturday 21 FebruaryUncertainty persists with the forecasts early in the weekend given uncertainty regarding the movement of the low. Showers and storms may persist in the far north of the state. Rain areas may also persist over the state's southeast on Saturday, but it is more likely that the rain will be easing to showers. Some showers are also expected over the remainder of the eastern districts in a weak onshore flow, and showers and storms over the far north of the state in a humid airmass. The west should remain mostly fine.Sunday until TuesdayThere is a high level of uncertainty in the forecasts from Sunday onwards. A low or trough may lie over the base of the Top End of the Northern Territory, possibly causing showers and storms over Queensland's northwest on Sunday and early in the new week. A band of showers and storms may extend from the northwest down across the central interior towards the southeast of the state early in the new week as well as a low level trough lays over the region. Showers and storms also developing over the remainder of the state's north from Monday in an increasingly humid and unstable airmass, and fine and mostly sunny over the far southwest.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Wednesday.Product IDQ10700
