MELBOURNE - Feb 16/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation Tropical cyclone Lam lies over the northern parts of the Gulf of Carpentaria. A monsoon trough extends from tropical cyclone Lam, across northern Cape York Peninsula, to a tropical low over the Coral Sea. A high pressure system will remain near New Zealand over the next few days, maintaining a firm ridge over the southern and central east coast. The low in the Coral Sea is expected to shift southwest over the southern Coral Sea during the next few days, possibly approaching the southern Queensland coast late in the week. Forecast for the rest of TuesdayRain areas and storms with some locally heavy falls over the northern reaches of Cape York Peninsula. A slight to medium chance of showers about the remainder of the east coast. A slight chance of some gusty showers or storms over the southwest of the state but with little or no rainfall. Fine and sunny through the remainder of the interior. Fresh southeasterly winds along the east coast, becoming strong and gusty between Mackay and Cape Moreton later in the day. Strong northwest winds through Torre Strait. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere. Hot in the southwest of the state.Fire Danger - Very high over parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district.Wednesday 18 FebruaryShowers, storms and areas of rain over the northern reaches of Cape York Peninsula, as the monsoon trough remains in the region. The slight to medium chance of showers over the remaining eastern districts in an onshore flow. Instability should also increase through southern central districts and the Wide Bay as the low over the southern Coral Sea tracks further west, causing showers to increase. Some showers and storms in the southwest of the state as an upper trough approaches but with little if any rainfall. A large and powerful easterly swell developing south of about Gladstone.Thursday 19 FebruaryThe low over the southern Coral Sea is likely to continue moving towards the Capricornia coast, and a strong trough could extend southwards over southeast Queensland. Rain areas and possible storms will develop over the east coast districts south of about Yeppoon with heavy falls likely. Dangerous surf also developing along exposed beaches south of about Gladstone. A medium to high chance of showers and storms over the remainder of the eastern districts, with a slight to medium chance extending into the central interior. Much of the west should remain fine apart from the chance of showers or storms persisting in the southwest.Friday 20 FebruaryTropical cyclone Lam may move into the southwestern reaches of the Gulf of Carpentaria, possibly causing showers and to increase in the far western parts of the Gulf Country, however the uncertainty with that forecast is high at this early stage. A medium to high chance of showers and storms over the remainder of the northern districts and also over most of the eastern half of the state as an upper trough approaches from the west. The Coral Sea low may move towards the Capricornia coast. A strong surface trough extending southwards from the low is likely to move across the state's southeast, producing heavy rain, showers and storms over the southeast districts, and dangerous swells about the coast south of about Gladstone.Saturday until MondaySome uncertainty persists with the forecasts early in the weekend given uncertainty regarding the movement of any tropical systems. Rain and storms may persist in the far northwest of the state depending on the position of the Gulf of Carpentaria low or cyclone. Rain areas may persist over the state's southeast on Saturday, but it is more likely that the rain will be easing to showers. Some showers are also expected over the remainder of the eastern districts in a weak onshore flow, and showers and storms over the far north of the state in a humid airmass. The west should remain mostly fine. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700 Notice Board MetEye extended into Queensland --> Cairns (Saddle Mountain) Radar reinstalled Rainfall Forecast Terminology Media Releases Marketing Meteorological Offices Cairns weather Charleville weather Longreach weather Mackay weather Mount Isa weather Rockhampton weather Townsville weather Weipa weather Other Information Fire Weather Forecast Areas About Weather Forecast Services About Warning Services Warnings Water Climate Environment Tropical Cyclones Tsunami Warning Centre Agriculture - Water and the Land Marine & Ocean UV & Sun Protection Rainfall & River Conditions Graphical Views Radar Maps Rainfall Forecasts Seasonal Outlooks Climate Variability & Change Climate Data Online Seasonal Streamflow Forecasts Water Storage MetEye™ National Weather Services Aviation Weather Services Defence Services Space Weather Services Registered User Services Commercial Weather Services Business Entry Point Facebook Twitter Youtube Blog Google+ Careers Sitemap Feedback Freedom of Information Indigenous Weather Knowledge Glossary This page was created at 19:30 on Monday 16 February 2015 (GMT) © Copyright Commonwealth of Australia 2015, Bureau of Meteorology (ABN 92 637 533 532) | Disclaimer | Privacy | Accessibility var hostname = window.location.hostname; var host = hostname.split("."); if (host[0] == "reg") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-20386085-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); else if (host[0] == "wdev") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-21709175-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); else var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-3816559-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ?
