Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 4/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high over the Great Australian Bight will move slowly east during the rest of the week, extending a strengthening ridge along the Queensland coast. An upper low over the central highlands will move slowly east-northeastwards and gradually weaken, moving offshore on Thursday. A surface trough extends from about Ingham to the southern interior, and will shift westwards during the next few days. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Ola over the eastern Tasman Sea is moving to the southeast while weakening and is expected to remain well offshore from the Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayModerate to high chance of showers and storms through central districts and extending south into the southern interior, and also about the far north. Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms through the eastern tropics. Moderate chance of showers in southeast districts, mostly near the coast. Fine though partly cloudy elsewhere. Moderate westerly winds across the northern tropics. Moderate south to southeasterly winds elsewhere, fresh to strong about the east coast, with large and powerful surf along southern beaches.Thursday 5 FebruarySlight to medium chance of showers over much of the state, except for the far west and the far southern interior. Showers more likely over eastern districts north of St Lawrence. The chance of thunderstorms through the North West district, and through eastern districts north of St Lawrence but most likely over inland parts. Moderate westerly winds across the northern tropics. Moderate south to southeasterly winds elsewhere, fresh to strong about the east coast with large and powerful surf expected along southern beaches.Friday 6 FebruaryAn upper trough over western Queensland combined with increasing low level moisture should result in a slight to medium chance of showers over the far west extending northwards into the Peninsula, with possible thunderstorms north of about Boulia. The high near Tasmania will move slowly into the Tasman Sea maintaining a ridge with showers over eastern districts and strong winds along parts of the east coast. Showers may be more frequent along the coastal fringe between Cardwell and Cooktown, with the chance of thunderstorms with possibly heavy falls. Large and powerful surf is expected to decrease along southern beaches. Fine and mostly sunny over remaining parts of the state.Saturday 7 FebruaryThe high will drift slowly east across the Tasman Sea maintaining a ridge and showers over eastern districts, most likely along the coastal fringe. A low level trough over the eastern Coral Sea may shift slowly westwards towards the north Queensland coast, helping to generate fresh to strong winds and more frequent shower activity along the coastal fringe north of Cardwell, with the potential for thunderstorms. Showers and storms should continue about remaining northern tropics in an unstable airmass. Conditions are expected to remain fine and generally sunny over the interior.Sunday 8 FebruaryThe high in the Tasman Sea is expected to drift east and weaken and the low level trough is expected to continue shifting west across the northern Coral Sea towards the north Queensland coast. The ridge should therefore weaken along the far southern coast with showers decreasing also. The trough should help maintain fresh to strong winds through northern coastal waters. Showers and thunderstorms continuing over the northern tropics, showers tending more frequent along the coastal fringe north of about Cardwell. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state.Monday until WednesdayThe next high will move east through the Great Australian Bight and into the Tasman Sea during Monday. The ridge should therefore strengthen along the southern Queensland coast, with showers over eastern districts. An upper trough may shift northwards over southern and central Queensland helping to enhance shower activity over eastern districts with the potential for thunderstorms. At this stage, moisture and instability are expected to continue over the northern tropics, with showers and thunderstorms continuing. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Thursday.Product IDQ10700
