Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 3/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high over the Great Australian Bight will move slowly east during the rest of the week, extending a strengthening ridge along the Queensland coast. An upper low over the central highlands will move slowly east-northeastwards and gradually weaken, moving offshore on Thursday. A surface trough extends from about Ingham to the southern interior, and will shift westwards during the next few days. Tropical Cyclone Ola over the eastern Coral Sea is moving to the south and weakening; it should become slow moving late today, and is likely to be downgraded to an ex-tropical cyclone. the system should remain well offshore from the Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayModerate to high chance of showers and storms through central districts and into the southern interior, and also about the far north. Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms into the tropical east. Moderate chance of showers in southeast districts, mostly near the coast. Fine though partly cloudy elsewhere. Moderate westerly winds across the northern tropics. Moderate south to southeasterly winds elsewhere, fresh to strong about the east coast.Thursday 5 FebruaryThe upper low over inland Queensland will slowly weaken, while drier air will penetrate north and east towards the tropical east coast with only the slight chance of showers in the interior. The deep low over the southern Coral Sea should remain well offshore of the state, but combined with the strengthening ridge along the east coast, strong winds will continue in southern waters and showers will remain likely along most of the east coast. Large and powerful surf expected along southern beaches. Showers and storms continuing about the far northern tropics.Friday 6 FebruaryThe high near Tasmania will move slowly into the Tasman Sea maintaining a ridge with strong winds and showers along the eastern Queensland coast. Large and powerful surf expected to continue along southern beaches. Showers and storms are also expected about the northern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny over the interior.Saturday 7 FebruaryThe high will drift slowly east in the Tasman Sea, maintaining a ridge and showers along the eastern Queensland coast. Strong winds and large and powerful surf are expected to ease. Showers and storms should continue about the northern tropics. Conditions are expected to remain fine and generally sunny over the interior.Sunday until TuesdayThe high in the Tasman Sea will drift east and weaken while another high will move east through the Great Australian Bight and into the Tasman Sea by Monday. A ridge will be maintained along the eastern Queensland coast, with showers to continue for most coastal areas. At this stage, moisture and instability are expected to continue over the northern tropics, with showers and thunderstorms through these areas, and generally contracting to more northwest areas.
