Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 19/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A surface trough extends from the northwest of the state to the central coast, with a humid and unstable airmass to its north. This trough and the associated storm focus should shift further north during the next couple of days. Another weak trough is shifting west over the southeastern interior of the state today as a ridge builds along the southern Queensland coast, dragging an unstable airmass further inland. A new, more significant surface trough should then enter southwestern Queensland on Tuesday and deepen further in response to a strong upper-level trough on Wednesday, slowly shifting east over the interior of the state for the remainder of the week.
Forecast for the rest of MondayA high chance of showers and storms north of about Cairns to Burketown and also over the southeast of the state near and east of the Great Dividing Range. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms through eastern districts and remaining parts of the tropics and Darling Downs. Fine and clear in the west. Light to moderate southwest to southeasterly winds, tending north to northeasterly near the east coast.Tuesday 20 JanuaryA medium to high chance of showers and storms through the far northern tropics north of about Cooktown, and in a separate area through the southeastern corner of the state. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms is expected through the remaining northern and central districts and west to the Maranoa. Fine and sunny conditions will persist through the west. Light to moderate southwest to northwesterly winds, tending moderate to fresh in the far southwest of the state. Light to moderate north to northeasterly winds about eastern districts.Fire Danger - Very High in the Central West, Darling Downs, and Channel Country districts.Wednesday 21 JanuaryA new, deep trough over the southwest of the state should shift slowly east over the interior. In response to a significant upper-level trough moving into southwestern Queensland a surface low is likely to form on the surface trough. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms over areas north and east of about Mount Isa to Longreach to Charleville in the unstable airmass to the east of the trough, with a higher likelihood of activity over the far northern tropics and through the eastern and southeastern interior. Some rain areas and locally heavy falls are possible over eastern districts, however there is uncertainty in the areas most likely to be affected. Fine and windy conditions are expected in the southwest.Thursday 22 JanuaryThe surface trough and low will most likely shift only a little further east over the interior, while the upper level trough is likely to further strengthen. A moist and unstable wind flow into the surface trough and low should result in a medium to high chance of showers and storms over northern, central and southeastern districts, with a slight chance extending west towards about Winton to Thargomindah. Some rain areas and locally heavy falls are possible over eastern districts, however there is uncertainty in the areas most likely to be affected. Fine and sunny conditions will persist through the remaining west.Friday 23 JanuaryThe surface trough and low are likely to continue slowly moving eastwards. Fine and sunny conditions in the west and southwest of the state, with showers and storms expected across much of the state elsewhere, and most likely over eastern and northern districts.Saturday until MondayThe surface trough will remain the dominant feature through the outlook period, though some uncertainty persists with its movement. At this stage the trough is expected to continue to shift slowly east while weakening, most likely contracting off the southern Queensland coast during the weekend. Showers and storms are expected to the northeast of the trough and about the east coast otherwise, with fine and sunny conditions persisting to its southwest. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700
