Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 10/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends across southern Cape York Peninsula to a low over the northwestern Coral Sea. A high near New Zealand extends a weakening ridge onto the east Queensland coast to the south of the monsoon trough. A deep trough extends from central Australia into far southwestern Queensland. The trough is expected to shift further east into western Queensland during Monday and Tuesday. An upper level trough will move east over southeastern Queensland during today and Monday.
Forecast for the rest of SundayRain areas and storms across the very far north with some locally heavy falls likely. A medium to high chance of showers and storms west of about Georgetown to Cunnamulla with some storms possibly severe, particularly in the far southwest of the state. Mostly cloudy over the southeast and near the remaining southern interior border with some showers and patchy rain developing. A slight chance of showers about the remaining east coast, increasing to a medium chance near the Cairns coast. Fine and mostly sunny over the central interior. Moderate to fresh and gusty west to northwesterly winds across the far north. Moderate to fresh and gusty southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere, tending north to northeasterly in the west.Monday 12 JanuaryThe low over the northwest Coral Sea will possibly start to shift south and has some chance of developing further. A medium to high chance of showers and storms is expected through the northern tropics, with some rain areas continuing north of about Coen. Showers and storms will continue in the far west of the state near the inland trough, with some storms likely severe, particularly in the very far west. An upper trough will combine with an onshore wind flow to result in a cool and cloudy day over the southeast corner of the state with patchy rain and some showers. A slight to medium chance of showers will also extend north to about Mackay and into the southern central interior.Tuesday 13 JanuaryThere is some uncertainty associated with the movement of the low but at this stage it will most likely shift southwest over the Coral Sea as a monsoon low or weak tropical cyclone. If the low remains offshore on Tuesday than a medium chance of showers and storms is expected over the tropics, increasing to a high chance north and west of Cairns. The upper trough will clear the southern coast though some showers or drizzle will continue in its wake over the southeastern corner of the state. The trough over the west will likely shift a little further east, with a medium to high chance of showers and storms over western Queensland near and to its east.Wednesday 14 JanuaryThere remains some uncertainty associated with the movement of the low but it will most likely shift southwest towards the north tropical coast as a monsoon low or weak tropical cyclone. A medium to high chance of showers and possible storms is expected over the tropics. The surface trough is likely to move east through the day and should lie from the northwest to the southeastern interior in the day. Showers and storms are therefore likely in a band from the northwest through the central west and into the Maranoa and Warrego and western Darling Downs. There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms reaching the southeast inland late in the day. Just the slight chance of showers is expected near the central coast, with possible storms inland. Fine and sunny conditions will spread to the southwest of the state.Thursday until SaturdayForecasts in the tropics are heavily dependent on the movement of the monsoon low or tropical cyclone. If the system does cross the coast its most likely impact will be heavy rains about the northeast of the state. The trough will become slow moving from the northwest of the state through the central west and into the southeastern interior. Showers and storms are likely near and to the east of the trough. Fine and sunny conditions are expected in the southwest and the Northwest District. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Sunday.Product IDQ10700
