Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 8/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
The monsoon trough lies across Cape York Peninsula and is near stationary. A weak low lies well off the Peninsula coast south of Papua New Guinea, and may develop over the next few days. A high near New Zealand will maintain a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast during the next few days. An upper level trough and its associated deep surface trough will slowly approach far western Queensland on Friday and the weekend.
Forecast for the rest of ThursdayModerate chance of showers over the eastern districts. Rain areas, showers and storms over the Peninsula district and into the far west. A slight to medium chance of showers over the remaining northern districts. Fine and mostly clear over the southern interior and central interior. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds, tending westerly over the far north.Friday 9 JanuaryModerate to high chance of showers over the eastern districts. Rain areas, showers and storms over the Peninsula district and into the far west, extending into the southwest. A slight to medium chance of showers over the remaining northern districts. Fine and mostly sunny over the southern interior and central interior. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds, tending westerly over the far north.Fire Danger -  Very High over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.Saturday 10 JanuaryThe ridge along the east coast should begin to weaken, though showers are expected to continue along the east coast. The monsoon trough seems likely to continue producing areas of rain, showers and some storms over Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait. Showers and storms are likely to continue over the far northwest of the state as moisture remains in the region. The continued presence of a slow-moving, a deep trough over central Australia will generate showers, rain areas and a few storms in the Channel Country. A tropical low south of Papua New Guinea is expected to remain slow moving.Sunday 11 JanuaryThe ridge along the east coast will continue weakening, though showers are expected to continue along the east coast. The monsoon trough seems likely to continue producing areas of rain, showers and some storms over Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait. Showers and storms are likely to continue over the west and northwest of the state as moisture remains in the region. The continued presence of a slow-moving, a deep trough over central Australia will generate showers, rain areas and a few storms in the Channel Country. A tropical low south of Papua New Guinea is expected to remain slow moving, and may develop further.Monday 12 JanuaryShowers are expected to continue along the east coast. The monsoon trough seems likely to continue producing areas of rain, showers and some storms over Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait. Along the monsoon trough, a tropical low well off the northern Queensland coast may develop further while remaining slow moving. Showers and storms are likely to continue over the west and northwest of the state as moisture remains in the region. A trough through the southwest of the state is likely to produce showers and thunderstorms over southwestern Queensland.Tuesday until ThursdayThe ridge should continue producing showers over the eastern districts whilst the monsoon trough seems likely to continue producing areas of rain, showers and some storms over Cape York Peninsula, Torres Strait and into the North Tropical Coast. Showers and storms are likely to continue over western Queensland, with showers and storms likely to push through southern inland Queensland during the outlook period.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Friday.Product IDQ10700
