MELBOURNE - Jan 8/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of South Australia was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A trough of low pressure over southern and western parts of the State will move slowly north tonight. A low will develop over the far north of the State on Friday then move slowly southwards during Saturday and Sunday, to be south of Port Lincoln by late Sunday. The low will link with an upper trough and a tropical air mass over the northwest of Australia to produce a significant rain band over northern parts of the State on Friday, then extend southeastwards over the ranges and eastern districts on Saturday and Sunday. Forecast for the rest of ThursdayWidespread showers and frequent thunderstorms over the northern agricultural area and southern pastoral districts. Rain periods in the far north late afternoon and evening. A medium to high chance of showers elsewhere with possible thunderstorms. Warm to hot with light to moderate northerly winds ahead of a milder, moderate to fresh southerly change in the south.Friday 9 JanuaryAreas of rain and the chance of thunderstorms. Heavy falls and possible widespread flooding over the North West and North East Pastoral districts and possibly also over the Flinders and Mid North. Warm to hot in the northeast with moderate northerly winds, turning cool to mild with moderate to fresh south to southeasterly winds elsewhere.Saturday 10 JanuaryAreas of rain. Heavy falls and possible widespread flooding over the Pastoral districts, Flinders, Mid North, Mount Lofty Ranges, Riverland and Murraylands. The chance of thunderstorms over central and eastern parts. Warm to hot in the northeast with fresh northerly winds. Cool to mild with fresh southeast to southerly winds over the remainder, strong about the coasts.Sunday 11 JanuaryA medium chance of showers in the west. Areas of rain over the remainder, with the chance of thunderstorms in the east and also over the West Coast. Mild to warm with moderate to fresh north to northeasterly winds, turning southeast to southwesterly in the west and north.Monday 12 January Areas of rain and possible thunder along the eastern border, contracting further east during the morning. A slight to medium chance of showers over the remainder but becoming fine over the northwest. Warm in the north and east and cool to mild elsewhere. Moderate to fresh northeast to northwest winds, shifting west to southwesterly during the day. Cumulative rainfall totals until midnight Monday are expected to be 50 to 150 mm northeast of a line Giles to Cowell to Mount Gambier, with 30 to 50 mm over the remainder of the agricultural area and West Coast and and 10 to 30 mm elsewhere.
