MELBOURNE - Jan 6/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of South Australia was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A trough of low pressure is lingering around the South Australian coast. A tropical low near the northwest coast of Western Australia combined with an upper trough developing over the east of Western Australia, is likely to extend a significant rain band into the far northwest of the State from Thursday and is forecast to extend southeastwards over most of the State by Friday. Forecast for the rest of WednesdayShowers and thunderstorms developing south of about Coober Pedy to Marree to Broken Hill, more likely over the agricultural area in the afternoon and evening. Rain and possible thunderstorms in the far northwest. Warm in the far northwest, but hot to very hot elsewhere. Light to moderate northeasterly winds, freshening in the northwest. Moderate afternoon coastal sea breezes.Thursday 8 JanuaryFine northeast of Marree. Rain and possible thunderstorms in the far northwest. Showers and thunderstorms elsewhere. Warm to hot with light to moderate northerly winds ahead of a milder, moderate to fresh southerly change in the south.Friday 9 JanuaryAreas of rain and the chance of thunderstorms, with heavy falls and possible widespread flooding over the Northwest Pastoral and the Northeast Pastoral west of about Oodnadatta. Hot in the northeast with moderate northerly winds, turning cool to mild with moderate to fresh south to southeasterly winds elsewhere.Saturday 10 January Areas of rain northeast of about Ceduna to Keith, with heavy falls and possible widespread flooding and the chance of thunderstorms over the Pastoral districts and possibly the Flinders but more likely in the far north of the State. The slight chance of showers elsewhere. Generally cool to mild with moderate to fresh southerly winds. Cumulative rainfall totals until midnight Saturday are expected to be 50 to 150 mm over the east of the North West Pastoral, the North East Pastoral west and south of about Moomba, the Flinders and possibly the north of the Mid North, with local falls of up to 200 mm possible. 10 to 20 mm is expected for much of the southern coastal districts, and the far west and far northeast, with 20 to 50 mm elsewhere. Sunday until TuesdayPossible showers Sunday and Monday with the chance of thunderstorms in the far northeast. Possible showers contracting to the Lower South East and Kangaroo Island on Tuesday. Mild to warm.
