Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 5/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system in the Tasman Sea will move slowly east towards New Zealand during the next few days, maintaining a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. The monsoon trough is expected to develop across the northern Gulf of Carpentaria and northern Coral Sea through the week. An upper level trough extends over southern and central parts of the state and is expected to shift northwards over the next few days.
Forecast for the rest of TuesdayShowers and the chance of some storms about the eastern districts, spreading to rain at times with some locally heavy falls about the coastal fringe of the North Tropical Coast and the Central Coast. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms through the southern and central interior. Areas of rain, showers and storms over the Gulf Country and northwest districts, and some locally heavy falls are possible. Cool and cloudy over the northern interior. Moderate to fresh and southeast to northeasterly winds.Wednesday 7 JanuaryThe high in the Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge and shower activity along the Queensland's east coast, more frequent with possible storms about the north tropical coast and central coasts. The monsoon trough should spread across Cape York Peninsula, producing rain areas, showers and storms over the Peninsula district and near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. A medium chance of showers and storms over the rest of the northern interior. Fine and mostly sunny over the southern interior and central interior.Thursday 8 JanuaryThe ridge should gradually weaken along the east coast, and so the associated shower activity should ease about along the east coast, though there will still be a moderate chance of them about the eastern tropics. Showers, storms and rain areas should continue over Cape York Peninsula, Torres Strait and along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast near the developing monsoon trough. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms over the remaining northern districts and also near the southwestern border. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere.Friday 9 JanuaryThe high near New Zealand will push some showers onto Queensland's east coast, more likely over the eastern tropics. Showers and storms may increase about Queensland's western border area as a low or surface trough approaches from the west, though there is a high level of uncertainty about its movement this far out. Rain areas, showers and storms will continue near the monsoon trough over Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere.Saturday until Monday
The ridge along the east coast should weaken during the weekend but will nonetheless push some showers onto the east coast. The monsoon trough seems likely to continue producing areas of rain, showers and some storms over Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait. Showers and storms are likely to continue over the far northwest of the state as moisture remains in the region. The possible arrival of a low or trough from central Australia may generate showers and storms in the Channel Country and southern interior during the weekend, though there is a high level of uncertainty about this scenario developing at this stage.
