Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 5/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system in the Tasman Sea will move slowly east towards New Zealand during the next few days, maintaining a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. The monsoon trough is expected to develop across the northern Gulf of Carpentaria and northern Coral Sea through the week. An upper level trough extends over southern and central parts of the state and is expected to shift northwards over the next few days.
Forecast for the rest of MondaySome showers and possible thunderstorms over east coast districts, with showers becoming more frequent near the exposed coast tonight. A medium chance of showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior, becoming less likely tonight. Cloudy with patchy rain through the central interior. A medium to high chance of showers and thunderstorms over remaining western and northern parts with some locally heavy falls possible with storms. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeast winds.Tuesday 6 JanuaryShowers and possible storms about the east coast and nearby inland, more frequent near the east tropical and central coasts with possible locally heavy falls. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms through the southern and central interior. Showers and storms through the northern half of the state, more likely through the northern and western Peninsula and into the Gulf Country where some locally heavy falls are possible with storms. A cool day under cloud cover through the northwest and northern interior. Moderate to fresh and gusty southeast to northeasterly winds.Wednesday 7 JanuaryThe high will remain slow moving in the Tasman Sea with a firm ridge persisting along the east Queensland coast. The moist onshore flow will result in some showers about the east coast, more frequent with possible storms about the north east tropical coast and central coasts. The monsoon trough will continue to strengthen over the far north, producing rain areas, showers and storms over the Peninsula district and near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. A medium chance of showers and storms will remain through the northern interior, with a slight chance near the Northern Territory border. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expecting over remaining areas.Thursday 8 JanuaryThe high should move to the southeast of New Zealand, with the ridge weakening over southern Queensland waters though remaining firm elsewhere along the east coast. Showers should therefore decrease further along the southeast coast, though a medium chance will persist about the central and east tropical coasts. Showers, storms and rain areas will continue through Cape York Peninsula and along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast near the developing monsoon trough. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms will continue over remaining northern districts and also near the southwestern border. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere.Friday 9 JanuaryThe high will remain to the southeast of New Zealand, with a slight chance of showers continuing near the east coast of Queensland in the onshore wind flow, increasing to a medium chance near the east tropical coast. A deep low will most likely move southeast over central Australia and approach the far southwestern Queensland border, increasing instability in the far west with a slight to medium chance of showers and storms expected. Rain areas, showers and storms will continue through Cape York Peninsula, Torres Strait and near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast near and to the south of the monsoon trough. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere.Saturday until MondayThe ridge will weaken during Saturday though a new high will enter the Tasman Sea late Sunday, maintaining the ridge. A slight chance of showers will persist about the east coast of Queensland in the onshore wind flow. The monsoon trough will most likely remain over the Gulf of Carpentaria though drift south through the Coral Sea. Showers, storms and rain areas will likely persist through the very far north and northwest of the state near the monsoon trough. A trough over central Australia may shift east into the southern interior of Queensland, with showers and storms near the southwestern border gradually developing further east through the southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700
