Instability will persist across much of the west and north of the state as the upper trough lies from the Central Coast to the southwest of the state. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms over many western and northern areas, increasing to a high chance through the northwest near a low level trough and also through the northern Peninsula near the developing monsoon trough. Temperatures will remain several degrees below the January average under the cloud across the north and west of the state.Wednesday 7 JanuaryThe high remain slow moving in the Tasman Sea with a firm ridge persisting along Queensland's east coast. The moist onshore flow will result in some showers about the east coast, more frequent with possible storms about the north east tropical coast and ranges. A medium to high chance of showers and storms will remain about Queensland's far northwest near the Northern Territory border. A slight chance of some showers and storms over the southwest of the state. Fine and mostly sunny over the southern interior and central interior.Thursday 8 JanuaryThe high should lie close to New Zealand with ridge along the east coast weakening whilst the upper trough should now lie form the northeast tropical coast to the northern Channel Country. Some showers should persist about the east coast and adjacent inland in the moist onshore flow, more frequent about the northeast tropical coast. A medium to high chance of showers and storms will remain about Queensland's far northwest near the Northern Territory border in the moist flow from the Gulf of Carpentaria. Showers, storms and rain areas are likely across northern Cape York Peninsula in the strengthening monsoonal flow. Fine and mostly sunny over the remaining southern and central interior.Friday until SundayThe ridge along the east coast should continue to produce showers over Queensland's far eastern districts, mostly near the coast. Areas of rain, showers and some thunderstorms over the Peninsula district as the monsoon trough remains over the region. Moist air flowing from the Gulf of Carpentaria down into the Northern Territory interior should produce more showers and storms over Queensland's far northwest border region and perhaps over the Channel Country. Shower, storms and possible rain areas may develop further over far western Queensland on Saturday and Sunday as the next upper trough system develops over central Australia but there remains some uncertainty about the development of this system. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Monday.Product IDQ10700
