Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 3/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system near New Zealand extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast and a moist east to northeasterly wind flow through much of the state. A slow moving surface trough lies over central Australia. An upper level trough will enter the southwest of the state today and should shift east northeast over the state through the first half of next week.
Forecast for the rest of SundayIsolated showers about the east coast with more frequent showers and the chance of storms about the north tropical coast. A moderate to high chance of showers and storms over the western districts and western Cape York Peninsula with some locally heavy falls possible. Less active over the most of the central and eastern interior with the slight to moderate chance of showers and storms. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeast winds.Monday 5 JanuaryA ridge of high pressure should persist along the Queensland's east coast, pushing showers and possibly some storms across the far eastern districts. Showers and storms increasing over the state's far north as the monsoon trough develops across the northern Gulf of Carpentaria and Cape York Peninsula. Remaining active over the state's west as moist air gets drawn into a surface trough over the region, resulting in widespread showers and storms over the western districts and some locally heavy falls. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms about the remainder of the state's interior.Tuesday 6 JanuaryThe ridge will continue pushing showers and possibly some storms onto the east coast and then into the nearby interior. Showers and storms remaining active across western Queensland as a surface trough remains in the area, and some locally heavy falls are possible over the western districts, contracting into the state's northwest late in the day. Showers and storms less likely over the remainder of the interior.Wednesday 7 JanuaryThe ridge should weaken a little about Queensland's east coast, but will still be strong enough to push some showers onto the eastern districts. The monsoon trough will continue to strengthen over the state's far north, producing rain areas, squally showers and storms over the Peninsula district. Active showers and storms are still possible about Queensland's far northwest near the Northern Territory border. Just the slight chance of some showers and storms over the southwest of the state, and fine yet partly cloudy over the southern interior and central interior.Thursday until SaturdayMoist air flowing into a broad area of low pressure could continue to produce showers and storms over Queensland's far northwest late in the week. The ridge of high pressure should persist about the east coast, pushing showers across the eastern districts, more likely about the northeast coast. Fine and mostly sunny over the southern interior and central interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Sunday.Product IDQ10700
