Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 2/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high in the Tasman Sea will extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast which will strengthen during Friday and Saturday. The ridge will extend a moist easterly wind flow on to much of the east coast. A weak surface trough lies through southwestern Queensland. The trough is expected to shift further west into central Australia during the next few days, spreading moisture and instability west towards the Northern Territory border.
Forecast for the rest of FridayShowers about the east coast and nearby inland, with some local thunder possible. Fine and partly cloudy near the far southwestern border. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms elsewhere, increasing to a high chance over the west of the state, into the southern interior and also about the western Peninsula. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds over eastern districts, tending north to northeasterly in the west.Saturday 3 JanuaryShowers about the east coast and nearby inland with some local thunder possible with more frequent showers near the central and east tropical coasts. A medium to high chance of showers and storms through much of western Queensland. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms is expected through the central and southeast interior. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds over eastern districts, tending north to northeasterly in the west.Sunday 4 JanuaryThe ridge along the east coast should persist as the high near New Zealand remains slow moving. The moist onshore wind flow will result in showers about the east tropical and central coasts. A surface trough will extend over central Australia, with a moist and unstable northerly wind flow to its east resulting in a medium to high chance of showers and storms through western Queensland, including the western Peninsula. Conditions will generally stabilise over southeast and central parts of the state with just the slight chance of showers or storms.Monday 5 JanuaryA new high will move east over Tasmania, maintaining a ridge along the east Queensland coast, while the monsoon trough is likely to develop through the Torres Strait and northern Coral Sea. Moderate to fresh onshore winds will produce showers and possible storms over east coast districts. Showers and storms will persist over western Queensland near a low level trough and also through the northern Peninsula to the south of the developing monsoon trough. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms will continue about the remaining interior.Tuesday 6 JanuaryThe ridge will persist along the east Queensland coast maintaining the moist onshore flow with further showers and possible storms about the east coast and adjacent inland. Instability will persist across much of the state with a slight to medium chance of showers and storms across most parts. The monsoon trough is expected to persist across the far northern Gulf of Carpentaria and northern Coral Sea. A moderate to high chance of showers and storms are expected across the far north and northwest of the state where humidity levels are highWednesday until FridayThe high will move east over the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand, maintaining a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast, while the monsoon trough is likely to develop further over the northern Coral Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria. This combination will produce moderate to fresh onshore winds and showers over east coast districts, more frequent north of Fraser Island with possible storms. Showers and storms should also increase over the northern Peninsula near the developing monsoon trough. Showers and storms will persist over far western Queensland, though could decrease during the outlook period as the trough over central Australia shifts further west.
