MELBOURNE - Jan 2/15 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high pressure system lies over the Tasman Sea directing a hot northerly airstream over Victoria. A low pressure trough will reach southwestern Victoria late today but will stall overnight. The trough will then move eastwards across most of the State on Saturday afternoon and evening ahead of a weakening cold front that will cross Bass Strait Saturday night. The remnants of the trough will linger over northeast Victoria during Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with a ridge of high pressure remaining over Tasmania. Forecast for the rest of FridayFine apart from isolated showers and thunderstorms over the East Gippsland ranges during the afternoon and evening. A generally hot and sunny day with moderate to fresh north to northwesterly winds developing across western and central areas. Lighter winds in the east with milder sea breezes along the Gippsland coast. A weak cooler southwesterly change developing by the evening in the southwest.Saturday 3 JanuaryHot to very hot with a fresh to strong and gusty north to northwesterly wind ahead of a cooler southwesterly change extending from the southwest during the afternoon, moving through central and northwestern districts late in the afternoon and evening and reaching eastern areas at night. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing, mainly near and following the change.Fire Danger - Severe to Extreme over central and western districts, Very High in the east.Sunday 4 JanuaryScattered showers contracting to the east by the afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms in the east and far north, mainly over the northeast. A mild day in the south but remaining warm in the north. Moderate south to southeasterly wind and fresh afternoon coastal seabreezes.Monday 5 JanuaryScattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the northeast, mainly during the afternoon. Fine elsewhere and generally sunny across the western half of the State. Mild in the south but remaining warm in the north. Light to moderate east to southeasterly winds and fresh afternoon coastal seabreezes.Tuesday 6 JanuaryLocal early drizzle about the Gippsland coast and scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the east, mainly during the afternoon. Fine elsewhere and mostly sunny across the western half of the State.
