Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 31/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A ridge along the east Queensland coast will strengthen during the next few days, extending a moist easterly wind flow on to much of the east coast. A surface trough extends from the northern interior into the western Darling Downs. It is expected to shift west during the next few days, spreading moisture and instability west towards the Northern Territory border.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayShowers and storms over northern districts apart from the northeast tropical coast where just the slight chance of showers is expected. Fine and mostly clear southwest of about Mount Isa to Goondiwindi. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms over remaining areas, mostly inland. Showers increasing near the far southern coast and central coast late tonight. Light to moderate southwest to southeasterly winds in the west, tending southeast to northeasterly elsewhere.Thursday 1 JanuaryShowers about the east coast south of Cairns, more frequent during the morning with possible local thunder. Just the slight chance of showers about the northeast coast from Cairns to Cooktown. Showers and storms over the remaining tropics and into the northern interior. Fine and mostly sunny southwest of Boulia to Thargomindah. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms over remaining parts. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds over eastern districts, tending north to north to northeasterly in the west.Friday 2 JanuaryThe ridge of high pressure should strengthen further about the east coast, pushing the surface trough into western Queensland. Showers are expected about much of the east coast in a moist and unstable easterly wind flow, with some local thunder likely. Mostly fine conditions are expected near the southwestern border with just the slight chance of showers and storms. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms is expected elsewhere, increasing to a high chance near the surface trough in the west and into the western Peninsula.Saturday 3 JanuaryA firm ridge of high pressure will persist along the east Queensland coast. Showers and possible storms will persist over eastern districts in the moist and unstable onshore wind flow, with showers more frequent near the central and east tropical coasts. Moisture will increase further through western Queensland with a medium to high chance of showers and storms. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms is expected through the central and southeast interior in a drier airmass.Sunday 4 JanuaryThe ridge along the east coast will maintain its strength as a new high moves across southern Australia. A surface trough will extend over central Australia, with a moist and unstable northerly wind flow extending through western Queensland to its east. This will result in a medium to high chance of showers and storms through the western Queensland, including the western Peninsula. The moist onshore wind flow will result in showers about the east coast, more frequent in the tropics where some storms are also possible. Just the slight chance of showers is expected over the central and southeastern interior under a drier airmass.Monday until WednesdayThe new high will move into the Tasman Sea, maintaining a ridge along the east Queensland coast, while the monsoon trough is likely to develop over Papua New Guinea and the northern Coral Sea. This combination will produce moderate to fresh onshore winds and showers along much of the east coast and through the far northern tropics where storms are also likely. Showers and storms will persist over far western Queensland in a moist and unstable northerly wind flow, though could decrease during the outlook period as the trough over central Australia shifts further west. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms will continue about the remaining interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Thursday.Product IDQ10700
