Australia -- Victoria Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 31/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high pressure ridge over Victoria will weaken tonight then a weak cold front will move across Bass Strait and Tasmania on Thursday morning. A new high pressure system will quickly develop just west of Tasmania in the wake of the front during Thursday afternoon before moving rapidly over the Tasman Sea on Friday. A low pressure trough will reach southwestern Victoria late on Friday but will stall overnight. The trough will then move eastwards across most of the State on Saturday afternoon and evening ahead of a weakening cold front that will cross Bass Strait Saturday night. The remnants of the trough will clear from Northeast Victoria during Sunday and another high pressure system will develop west of Tasmania.

A relatively cool night with light winds.Thursday 1 JanuaryIsolated showers over southern and mountain areas, mainly during the morning and early afternoon. Mild in the south but warm to hot in the north. Light winds inland, moderate southwest to southerly near the coast.Fire Danger -  Mainly moderate to high.Friday 2 JanuaryFine apart from isolated showers and thunderstorms over the East Gippsland ranges during the afternoon and evening. A hot day with a moderate to fresh northerly wind developing then a weak late cooler southwest change developing in the southwest.Saturday 3 JanuaryHot with a fresh to strong and gusty northerly wind ahead of a cooler southwesterly change extending from the southwest during the middle of the day before moving through central and northwestern districts later in the afternoon and reaching eastern areas at night. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing, mainly near and following the change.Sunday 4 JanuaryScattered showers and isolated thunderstorms contracting to the east by the afternoon and mostly clearing late in the day. A mild day in the south but remaining warm to hot in the north. Moderate south to southeasterly wind and fresh afternoon coastal seabreezes.The next routine forecast will be issued at 5:00 am EDT Thursday.Product IDV10310
