Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 29/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A surface trough stretches from the Gulf Country down to the southeast interior. A new ridge of high pressure will push dry air into the Channel Country tonight, spreading further across Queensland from the southwest during Tuesday. A broad upper level trough and associated cloud band lies over southeast Queensland, and should move off the southeast coast during Tuesday morning.
Forecast for the rest of MondayA medium to high chance of showers and storms in a broad band stretching from the northwest to the southeast. Fine and mostly clear in the southwest. The chance of showers over the remainder of the eastern districts. Mostly light winds in the south, tending moderate east to southeasterly in the north.Tuesday 30 DecemberA medium to high chance of showers and storms in a broad band stretching from the northwest to the southeast. Showers and possible storms over the remainder of the eastern districts. Fine and mostly sunny in the southwest. Light to moderate southwest to southeasterly winds in the south and west, tending southeast to northeast elsewhere.Wednesday 31 DecemberThe surface trough should extend from the northwest to the southeast of the state, with a slight to moderate chance of showers and storms along it and to its east, although much of the storm activity will remain inland from the coast. Fine and mostly sunny to the southwest of the trough.Thursday 1 JanuaryThe ridge of high pressure should strengthen about the east coast, pushing the surface trough inland to stretch from the Gulf Country down to the southeast interior. The ridge will continue pushing moisture inland, and will combine with a new upper trough over central Australia to produce a band of showers and storms near and east of the surface trough. Showers and storms less likely near the east coast. Fine and mostly sunny over the Channel Country.Friday 2 JanuaryThe ridge of high pressure should strengthen further about the east coast, pushing the surface trough towards western Queensland. The ridge will continue pushing moisture inland, and will combine with the upper trough to produce showers and thunderstorms in particular through western and southern Queensland, with thunderstorms less likely into eastern districts. Showers likely to increase through tropical coastal areas in the onshore flow.Saturday until MondayThe ridge along the east coast will maintain its strength into the weekend, with moisture through to western Queensland. Instability will be maintained over inland areas with showers and thunderstorms expected through the western half and far north of the state. Showers through eastern districts, in particular near the coast, with thunderstorms over the eastern interior a slight chance.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700
