Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 27/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A surface trough stretches from the northwest of the state to the southern interior and should remain in the same general area during Sunday. A coastal trough and southeasterly change is moving through far southeast Queensland but this should weaken during today. An upper level trough and associated cloud band should remain over much of southern Queensland through the weekend.
Forecast for the rest of SaturdayCool over the southern districts beneath a band of rain. Some moderate to heavy falls are possible, mainly with storms embedded within the rain band over all of the far southern districts except the Channel Country. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms over the northern interior and the central west. Relatively quiet over the eastern tropics with just the slight chance of shower over most parts. Moderate southwest to southeasterly winds over the Channel Country. Moderate southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere.Sunday 28 DecemberThe surface trough should stretch from the northwest down to the southern interior, drawing moist air into it from the east. The surface trough should combine with the upper trough to produce showers, storms and some patchy rain over the Maranoa region. Some moderate to locally heavy falls are also possible with storms over the Maranoa region. A medium to high chance of showers and storms over the remainder of the state's interior and also about the southeast district. The eastern tropics and central coast will remain mostly fine with just the slight chance of some showers.Monday 29 DecemberA medium to high chance of showers and storms in a broad band along the surface trough stretching from the northwest to the state's southeast. A new ridge of high pressure over the Great Australian Bight should push some drier air into southwest Queensland, and so fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected over the Channel Country. Showers and storms over the remainder of the eastern districts, less likely about the central coast.Tuesday 30 DecemberThe surface trough should initially stretch from the northwest down to the southeast of the state, with a band of showers and storms along it and to its east, however the ridge over the Great Australian Bight should push dry air further into Queensland during the day, causing the showers and storms to contract to the northeast. Fine, dry and sunny over the southwest of the state.Wednesday until FridayThe ridge should move into the Tasman Sea, and will gradually push moisture, and associated showers and storms inland across parts of the central and southern interior during the latter part of the week. Showers also becoming more frequent about the eastern districts, particularly the eastern tropics. The moderate to high chance of showers and storms over the northern districts, more likely in the northwest.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Saturday.Product IDQ10700
