Australia -- New South Wales Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 24/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of New South Wales was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A slow moving high near New Zealand and a trough lying from northwest NSW to the southeast are resulting in a warm and humid airmass over the northeastern half of the state. An active cold front will approach NSW Thursday with the trough expected to deepen further and the atmosphere to become more unstable. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to be quite widespread over the northeast half during the afternoon and evening tomorrow with isolated severe storms possible. The trough and thunderstorm activity is expected to contract to the northeast Friday and the front is expected to weaken and slip southeast as a high pressure ridge develops over southern parts of the state. The trough is likely to stall on the far north coast over the weekend and may deepen under the influence of a weak upper system with widespread rain and possible heavy falls developing for the north coast and ranges.

Mostly clear in the southwest. Northwest to northeasterly winds, tending southerly over the southern inland and along southern and central parts of the coast.Thursday 25 DecemberShowers and thunderstorms expected in eastern, northern and central districts, mostly during the afternoon and evening, with isolated severe storms possible. Mostly sunny in the southwest. Early fog patches in the east. Northwest to northeasterly winds, freshening near the coast, turning southwesterly in the southwest.Fire Danger -  Very high: Lower Central West Plains.Friday 26 DecemberShowers and thunderstorms in the northeast. Showers possible over the southern and central coast and ranges. Mostly sunny in the west. Northeast to northwest winds, ahead of a southwest to southeast change extending from the south, reaching the northeast at night. Southerly winds fresh to strong along the coast.Saturday 27 DecemberShowers and possible thunderstorms over the northeast third of the state, tending to rain areas on the far far north coast with possible moderate to heavy falls. Cloudy with the slight chance of a shower or two about the central and southern coast and ranges. Fine elsewhere. North to northwest winds at first in the northeast. Southeast winds extending throughout during the day.Sunday 28 DecemberRain areas along the northern coast and ranges with possible moderate to heavy falls. Showers over most remaining eastern and central districts with isolated thunderstorms possible inland. Fine in the far west. East to northeast winds in the east, freshening along the coast, southwest winds in the west.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EDT Thursday.Product IDN10031
