MELBOURNE - Dec 22/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high over the central Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The ridge will relax mid week as the high moves to the east of New Zealand and weakens. A surface trough extends through central Australia and is expected to shift east into southwestern Queensland today. The trough is then expected to remain slow moving over the southern interior of the state until late in the week. Forecast for the rest of TuesdayA medium to high chance of showers and gusty storms west of about Normanton to Thargomindah. Some storms will likely be severe. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms over remaining areas west of Coen to Winton to St George. A slight chance of showers over the far southern Darling Downs and also along the east coast. Moderate east to southeasterly winds along the east coast, fresh at times north of Fraser Island. Moderate to fresh northeast to northwesterly winds over the interior, tending gusty southwesterly in the far southwest during the day.Fire Danger - Very High over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district.Wednesday 24 DecemberThe surface trough will remain slow moving over the southern interior of the state. It will combine with a moistening airmass to its east to lead to a moderate chance of showers and storms over areas south and west of about Longreach, including the southern Darling Downs and border ranges. A slight chance of showers and storms will persist through the western Peninsula and Gulf Country, while a slight to medium chance of showers is expected along the east tropical coast in an onshore wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will persist through central parts of the state and the far southeast.Thursday 25 DecemberCloud will increase through the west of the state as an upper level trough moves into the area. A surface trough will remain slow moving in the far southwest of the state, while another weak surface trough will extend through the southeastern interior. A medium chance of showers and storms is therefore expected through the western Peninsula into the Gulf Country and western districts, with a slight chance extending into the southeastern inland. The east coast should be mostly fine with just the slight chance of a shower in a weak onshore wind flow.Friday 26 DecemberThe upper trough in the west of the state will shift a little further east, extending cloud from the northwest into the southern interior. A surface trough will persist through the southeastern interior, combining with the upper feature to lead to a medium to high chance of showers and storms over the Maranoa and southeastern inland, with a slight chance of activity extending to the southern coast. Conditions should be mostly fine over the remaining east coast with just the slight chance of a shower in the weak onshore wind flow. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms will persist through the far northwestern tropics and remaining western districts.Saturday until MondayAn upper trough and patchy cloud band will likely affect much of southern and western Queensland during the outlook period, while a surface trough through the interior of the state will remain slow moving. At least a medium if not high chance of showers, patchy rain and storms is therefore expected to persist through the northwest and central west of the state into southern districts. Cool conditions are expected through the interior under the cloud. Winds will most likely tend moist easterly along the central and southern coasts, leading to an increased chance of showers and also possible storms given the upper trough approaching from the west. The tropics are expected to remain mostly fine with just the chance of showers in the east and possible storms about the west Peninsula coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700 Notice Board MetEye extended into Queensland --> Cairns (Saddle Mountain) Radar reinstalled Rainfall Forecast Terminology Media Releases Marketing Meteorological Offices Cairns weather Charleville weather Longreach weather Mackay weather Mount Isa weather Rockhampton weather Townsville weather Weipa weather Other Information Fire Weather Forecast Areas About Weather Forecast Services About Warning Services Warnings Water Climate Environment Tropical Cyclones Tsunami Warning Centre Agriculture - Water and the Land Marine & Ocean UV & Sun Protection Rainfall & River Conditions Graphical Views Radar Maps Rainfall Forecasts Seasonal Outlooks Climate Variability & Change Climate Data Online Seasonal Streamflow Forecasts Water Storage MetEye™ National Weather Services Aviation Weather Services Defence Services Space Weather Services Registered User Services Commercial Weather Services Business Entry Point Facebook Google+ Youtube Blog Careers Sitemap Feedback Freedom of Information Indigenous Weather Knowledge Glossary This page was created at 04:15 on Tuesday 23 December 2014 (GMT) © Copyright Commonwealth of Australia 2014, Bureau of Meteorology (ABN 92 637 533 532) | Disclaimer | Privacy | Accessibility var hostname = window.location.hostname; var host = hostname.split("."); if (host[0] == "reg") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-20386085-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); else if (host[0] == "wdev") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-21709175-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); else var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-3816559-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ?
