MELBOURNE - Dec 21/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high over the central Tasman Sea extends a strengthening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move slowly eastwards and then stall near New Zealand through the middle part of this week. A surface trough extends over the southern inland of Queensland, and will move westwards to merge with a new trough that will move from central Australia into far western Queensland on Tuesday. Forecast for the rest of MondaySlight to medium chance of showers and thunderstorms in the far north, far west and southern interior. Slight chance of shower along the east coast, more likely along the north tropical coast. Fine and mostly sunny in the central interior. Moderate east to southeasterly winds along much of the east coast, light to moderate northeast to northwest inland and tending southwesterly in the far southwest.Fire Danger - Very high in the Central West and Channel Country.Tuesday 23 DecemberThe ridge will begin to weaken along the east coast, while a surface trough will move through central Australia and into far western Queensland. The surface trough, combined with a moistening northerly airflow to its east, will lead to at least a moderate chance of storms over the far north, and through western and southern districts. Mostly fine elsewhere, with the slight chance of showers mostly near the coast.Wednesday 24 DecemberThe ridge will still remain weak along the east coast, while a surface trough will move only slowly eastwards through inland Queensland. The surface trough, combined with a moistening northerly airflow to its east, will lead to at least a moderate chance of storms over western and southern districts. Mostly fine elsewhere with the slight chance of showers along coastal areas.Thursday 25 DecemberRelatively static weather pattern will continue, with the weak ridge persisting along the east coast, and the surface trough remaining very slow moving over inland Queensland. An upper trough will push into southwestern Queensland during the day, increasing cloudiness and instability through the west and south of the state, leading to showers and thunderstorms continuing in these areas, and pushing further east into the central interior. Isolated showers in the far east in the onshore flow.Friday until SundayThe high will remain slow moving near New Zealand, maintaining a flow of moisture across Queensland towards a broad area of low pressure pushing slowly east into Queensland. The upper trough will be maintained generally through southwest and southern Queensland. This will lead to a slight to moderate chance of storms through many areas in the state, in particular in the west and south.
