MELBOURNE - Dec 20/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high over the western Tasman Sea extends a strengthening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move slowly eastwards and then stall near New Zealand early to mid next week. A surface trough extends over the southern inland of Queensland, and will move westwards to merge with a new trough that will move from central Australia into far western Queensland on Tuesday. Forecast for the rest of SundaySlight to medium chance of showers and thunderstorms in a broad band from the northwest of the state towards the southeast interior. Slight to medium chance of a shower in the east. Fine and mostly sunny in the southwest. Moderate east to southeasterly winds along much of the east coast, light to moderate northeast to northwest inland and tending southwesterly in the far southwest.Monday 22 DecemberA ridge of high pressure should persist about the east coast, pushing showers onto parts of the far eastern districts at times. A broad area of low pressure over central Australia should draw moist northerly winds across Queensland into the far western districts, allowing for the slight to moderate chance of showers and storms in the far west. Fine over most of the remainder of the state except for the slight to moderate chance of some showers and storms about the southern interior.Tuesday 23 DecemberThe ridge will begin to weaken along the east coast, while a surface trough will move through central Australia and into far western Queensland. The surface trough, combined with a moistening northerly airflow to its east, will lead to at least a moderate chance of storms over western and southern districts. Mostly fine elsewhere, with the slight chance of showers mostly near the coast.Wednesday 24 DecemberThe ridge will still remain weak along the east coast, while a surface trough will move only slowly eastwards through inland Queensland. The surface trough, combined with a moistening northerly airflow to its east, will lead to at least a moderate chance of storms over western and southern districts. Mostly fine elsewhere with the slight chance of showers along coastal areas.Thursday until SaturdayThe high will remain slow moving near New Zealand, maintaining a flow of moisture across Queensland towards a broad area of low pressure over Central Australia. The combination of these factors should maintain a moderate chance of storms over the western districts. A region of showers and storms should extend gradually eastwards across southern Queensland late in the week as the trough drifts across the state.
