Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 19/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high in the Great Australia Bight will move eastwards over southeastern Australia over the next day or two, with a ridge developing along the east coast of Queensland. This is producing a dry southerly air flow across much of inland Queensland. A surface trough lies from the Gulf Country to the central Queensland coast, with moist and unstable air to its north. Another trough will produce a southeasterly wind change as it moves northwards through southeast Queensland this evening and further north along the east coast over the weekend. The inland trough will retreat to the west on Sunday and into next week, with at least weak moisture and instability returning to the eastern inland.
Forecast for the rest of FridayA medium chance of showers and thunderstorms in a band from the northwest of the state, across the northern interior and down to the Capricornia coast, although the northeast tropical coast should remain fine. Fine and clear conditions over the inland. Moderate south to southwest winds over much of the state, mostly light winds along the east coast.Saturday 20 DecemberSlight to moderate chance of showers along the southeast coast and nearby inland. A medium to high chance of showers and storms in a broad band from the Gulf Country across to the northeast tropics. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Moderate southeasterly winds developing along much of the east coast, light to moderate southeast to northeasterly winds inland.Fire Danger - Very High over parts of the southern tropics and western Darling Downs.Sunday 21 DecemberThe high in the Tasman Sea should continue to push moisture from the Coral Sea into eastern Queensland, while the upper trough may strengthen well off the east coast, resulting in the slight to medium chance of showers and storms about Queensland's eastern tropics. The medium to high chance of showers and storms in a broad band from the northwest of the state down to the southeast interior, and still fine, dry and sunny in the state's southwest.Monday 22 DecemberA ridge of high pressure should persist about the east coast, pushing showers onto the far eastern districts at times. Mainly fine over the eastern interior, except for the chance of some isolated showers about the southeast and northeast. A broad area of low pressure over central Australia should draw moist northerly winds across Queensland into the far western districts, allowing for at least the moderate chance of showers and storms in the northwest. Mostly fine about the southwest with the slight chance of some showers and storms.Tuesday 23 DecemberThe ridge will begin to weaken along the east coast, as the high moves eastwards towards New Zealand, while a trough will move through central Australia and into far western Queensland. The latter feature, combined with a moistening northerly airflow to its east, will lead to at least a moderate chance of storms over the western districts. Mostly fine over the eastern half of the state, with slight chance of showers about the far eastern districts.Wednesday until FridayThe high should move east across New Zealand, maintaining a flow of moisture across Queensland towards a broad area of low pressure over Central Australia. The combination of these factors should lead to at least a moderate chance of storms over the western districts. Relatively quiet over the eastern half of the state as a ridge of high pressure persists about the east coast, though there will at least the slight chance of showers about the far eastern districts at times. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Saturday.Product IDQ10700
