Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 16/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A surface trough in the southwest of the state will become slow moving over the interior on Wednesday. The trough will deepen further during Thursday as a new upper trough enters the state and should then shift east northeast, possibly reaching the southern coast during Friday.
Forecast for the rest of TuesdaySome gusty showers and thunderstorms through the southern interior, though with little or no rainfall. Areas of raised dust are also possible in the southwest of the state. The slight chance of showers or thunderstorms extending into the northwest and southeast of the state during the evening. Some showers and thunderstorms in the northern tropics north and west of Cairns, mostly through the Peninsula. Moderate southeast to northeasterly in the northern tropics. Moderate northwest to northeasterly winds elsewhere, tending fresh and gusty in the southern interior ahead of gusty southwesterly change.Wednesday 17 DecemberShowers and thunderstorms are possible through much of the state, particularly the southeast corner and the central and northern interior. The southern Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast district should remain fine and mostly sunny. Temperatures will rise further to be above the December average over most parts of the state, especially the west and southern inland. Mostly moderate northwest to northeasterly winds through the central interior and the tropics, fresh at times over the interior in the morning. Moderate west to southwesterly winds over the south of the state.Fire Danger -  Very High about the Central West and southeast interior.Thursday 18 DecemberThe surface trough over the interior of the state will deepen in response to a new upper trough entering the southern interior. Instability and moisture will increase further through much of the state in response to these features, with a high chance of showers and storms through the northwest into the central west and southeast corner of the state. Some locally heavy falls are possible with storms. There is a slight chance of showers and storms extending through the remaining central interior and into the Capricornia late in the day. A slight chance of showers and storms also persists in the southwest of the state and through the northwestern tropics.Friday 19 DecemberThe upper trough and surface trough should shift north and east through southern Queensland with the surface trough possibly contracting off the southern coast late in the day. Showers and thunderstorms are expected from the northwest of the state into the southeast though should generally decrease or clear areas south of about Fraser Island as the troughs contract offshore in these parts. The northeast tropics should remain fine and mostly sunny. Drier air will spread to the southwest and southern interior with fine and mostly sunny conditions here.Saturday 20 DecemberA broad upper trough should maintain instability across much southeastern, central and northern Queensland whilst a ridge should build along the southern coast of Queensland from a high entering the Tasman Sea. A drier southerly flow across the southwest and southern interior should maintain fine and mostly sunny conditions here. A slight chance of showers about the far southeast of the state in the onshore flow and about the east coast north of Bowen. Showers and thunderstorms elsewhere northeast of a line from about Boulia to Goondiwindi.Sunday until TuesdayThe upper trough will maintain instability across central and northern parts of the state during much of the outlook period with showers and storms expected. A ridge will extend over the southeastern corner of the state with just some showers expected and the slight chance of storms, mostly inland. The southwest of the state should remain fine on Sunday, although a trough may approach from the west late Monday that should move eastwards across the southern interior on Tuesday. This trough will increase instability once again with showers and storms likely to stretch from the northwest of the state into the southern interior on Monday, possibly extending into the southeast interior on Tuesday.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Wednesday.Product IDQ10700
