Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 14/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A stable airmass extends through much of the state. Instability will increase yet again from Tuesday however as a series of troughs move through central and southern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of SundayShowers through the Capricornia and southeast east of the Great Dividing Range, decreasing during the evening. Showers and storms through the northern tropics north and west of about Cooktown. Mostly fine elsewhere in the tropics and also near the central coast with just the slight chance of a shower. Fine and mostly clear in the west. Light to moderate north to northwesterly winds in the northern tropics. Light to moderate south to southeasterly winds elsewhere, fresh near the southern coast.Monday 15 DecemberA slight to medium chance of showers and storms through the tropics north and west of about Cooktown, including the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. The slight chance of showers over the remaining east coast, more likely north of about Townsville. Some showers and a possible storm or two over the Granite Belt and southeastern Darling Downs in the afternoon. Light to moderate southeast to northeasterly winds along the east coast. Light to moderate northeast to northwesterly winds elsewhere, fresh at times in the west during the morning.Fire Danger - Very High over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district.Tuesday 16 DecemberA trough should move eastwards over the southern interior of Queensland, increasing instability. The atmosphere will be relatively dry, though there should be sufficient moisture for the trough to trigger some showers and thunderstorms through western Queensland and the southern and southeast interior, possibly extending to the southern coast at night. Showers and thunderstorms also remain likely in the far north of the state, with fine and mostly sunny conditions expected elsewhere.Wednesday 17 DecemberThe trough will shift further eastwards into the southeast of the state and may reach the southern coast in the afternoon or evening. Showers and thunderstorms are possible through much of the state, particularly the southeast corner and the central and northern interior.Thursday 18 DecemberA new surface trough will most likely enter the west of the state on Thursday and shift east over the interior. An upper trough will also shift east over the interior of the state, greatly increasing instability. Showers and storms are therefore expected through the northwest into the central west and southern and southeast districts. There is a slight chance of showers and storms through the tropics and central inland.Friday until SundayThe new surface trough should shift east, possibly contracting off the southern coast late Friday or during Saturday. An upper level trough will also most likely affect the state during the outlook period. Showers and storms are expected over areas near and northeast of the surface trough, with a drier southerly wind flow extending over areas to its southwest. By Sunday much of the storm activity should be focused through the northern and central interior into the Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett district. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Monday.Product IDQ10700
