Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 13/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A strong upper trough lies over central and southeastern Queensland. It is expected to move eastwards into the Coral Sea on Sunday with a more stable airmass then becoming established over much of the state. Instability will increase yet again from mid week however as a series of troughs move through central and southern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of SundayCloudy at first with patchy rain and showers through the Capricornia and southeast, decreasing during the morning. The slight chance of showers through remaining central districts and the Maranoa. A medium to high chance of showers and storms through the northern tropics, mostly inland. Mostly fine on the southern tropical coast with just the slight chance of a shower. Fine and mostly sunny in the west. Light to moderate north to northwesterly winds in the northern tropics. Light to moderate south to southeasterly winds elsewhere, fresh near the Capricornia and southern coasts.Fire Danger - Very High over parts of the tropical and southeast inland.Monday 15 DecemberA slight to medium chance of showers and storms will persist through the northern tropics, mostly north of about Cairns. A much more stable upper pattern should spread through the remainder of the state. This will combine with a drier southerly airflow at the surface to result in fine conditions through most parts, with just the slight chance of showers near the east coast north of Fraser Island and one or two afternoon thunderstorms over the elevated terrain of the Granite Belt.Tuesday 16 DecemberA trough should move eastwards over the southern interior of Queensland, increasing instability. The atmosphere will be relatively dry, though there should be sufficient moisture for the trough to trigger some showers and thunderstorms through western Queensland and the southern and southeast interior. Showers and thunderstorms also remain likely in the far north of the state, with fine and mostly sunny conditions expected elsewhere.Wednesday 17 DecemberThe trough will shift further eastwards into the southeast of the state and may reach the southern coast in the afternoon or evening. Showers and thunderstorms are possible through much of the state, particularly the southeast corner and the central and northern interior.Thursday until SaturdayA new surface trough will most likely enter the west of the state on Thursday and shift east, possibly contracting off the southern coast during Saturday. An upper trough will also shift east through southern and central Queensland, greatly increasing instability. Showers and storms are therefore expected over areas near and northeast of the surface trough, with a drier southerly wind flow extending over areas to its southwest. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Sunday.Product IDQ10700
