Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Nov 24/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak ridge of high pressure extends along the east Queensland coast. A high will shift slowly east over the Great Australian Bight during the next few days, reinforcing the ridge as it nears Tasmania on Thursday. An upper trough extends from the northwest of the state into the southern interior and should shift east over southeastern Queensland on Wednesday. Another upper trough will move north from New South Wales into southern Queensland on Thursday. A slow moving surface trough lies through the southwest of the state. A coastal trough will most likely enter far southern Queensland waters during Thursday afternoon or evening and shift north.
Forecast for the rest of TuesdayShowers and storms developing through the northwest of the state into the southern interior, western Darling Downs and southern border ranges. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms developing over remaining areas south of Taroom to the Sunshine Coast during the afternoon and evening. Some showers near the east tropical and central coasts, becoming more likely during the evening. A slight chance of showers over the tropical interior during the evening. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A hot day through the southeast corner of the state with moderate northerly winds, fresh at times near the coast. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere.Fire Danger - Very High over parts of the central and southern interior, and the southeast and tropical inland.Wednesday 26 NovemberShowers and storms will continue to develop through the interior of the state east of the slow moving surface trough over the far southwest. They will also likely develop over the southeast, particularly inland parts, due to the upper trough moving east over the area. A trough over the Coral Sea will shift west onto the southern tropical and central coasts, producing showers and possible storms that will likely extend into the central and east tropical interior in the afternoon. An onshore wind flow will result in a medium chance of showers over the remaining tropical coast. Temperatures are expected to return to near average for the majority of the state.Thursday 27 NovemberThe ridge over the east Queensland coast will strengthen in response to the high shifting east to Tasmania. Instability will increase over the southeast of the state in response to the upper trough moving north from New South Wales and the coastal trough entering far southern coastal waters. Showers and storms should therefore develop from the northwest of the state into the central interior and southeast. Fine and sunny conditions are expected in the southwest. A slight chance of showers is expected along the east tropical and central coasts.Friday 28 NovemberThe high will remain slow moving near Tasmania while another high centre will develop over the western Tasman Sea, extending a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. The upper trough will shift north into central Queensland, while the coastal surface trough should also shift north towards Fraser Island. Storms should therefore focus over areas north of Brisbane to the Capricornia coast and west through the central interior. Conditions will stabilise near and south of Brisbane though some showers remain likely. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms persists through the remaining interior apart from the far southwest. Some showers are expected near the east tropical and central coasts in the onshore wind flow.Saturday until MondayThe high centres are expected to remain slow moving though weaken, with the ridge along the east coast gradually relaxing as a result. Showers are expected about the east tropical and central coasts, though should decrease by Monday as the ridge weakens. A new upper trough will most likely enter the southern interior of the state on Sunday and shift east, with showers and storms focused through far western parts of the state at first before extending east with the trough possibly to the southeastern interior on Monday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700
