MELBOURNE - Oct 14/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation An active trough will move east across eastern Queensland during the remainder of today. The trough is expected to contract off the far southern Queensland coast this evening and off the remainder of the east coast tonight. A high over southeastern Australia will then extend a ridge and dry airmass over much of the state in the wake of the trough for the remainder of the week. Forecast for the rest of TuesdayShowers and thunderstorms contracting east over central and southeast districts, clearing the southern coast during the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms developing through the far northern tropics, mostly in the Peninsula during the afternoon and evening. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A cool day in the west with moderate to fresh and gusty south to southwesterly winds. Light winds in the north with afternoon sea breezes. Fresh northerly winds over central and southeast parts ahead of a westerly change extending from the west.Fire Danger - Very High through inland parts east and north of about Longreach, reaching Severe in the Central Highlands and Coalfields district.Wednesday 15 OctoberA very dry airmass associated with a high south of Australia will result in fine and sunny conditions across much of Queensland. Some moisture will persist in the Peninsula district with showers and possible thunderstorms expected, most likely in the afternoon. A cold morning is likely over much of the interior with possible early frost on the Granite Belt.Thursday 16 OctoberThe high will shift slowly eastwards towards Tasmania, maintaining the ridge and dry airmass through much of Queensland. Some showers are likely again over the Peninsula where the moisture remains, with the chance of thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon. Fine and sunny conditions will continue across the remainder of the state, with possible early frost again on the Granite Belt.Friday 17 OctoberThe high will move east into the Tasman Sea, maintaining a ridge and fine conditions across much of the state. Moisture will increase through the tropics with showers near the coast during the morning, contracting inland during the afternoon with the slight chance of storms. An upper level trough will move east over the southeast of the state, increasing the likelihood of showers from the southern coast west to the Great Dividing Range. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will persist over the remainder of the state.Saturday until MondayA ridge through Queensland is expected to keep most of the state fine throughout the outlook period. Some showers will occur about the east coast and nearby inland in the onshore wind flow. Showers and storms are possible near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast in a relatively unstable airmass.
