MELBOURNE - Aug 27/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A complex low pressure system lies offshore over the far southern Coral Sea and is expected to shift south into the northern Tasman Sea during today and continue moving into the central Tasman Sea during the forecast period. A second low centre may develop during today well offshore of the southeast Queensland coast. A slow moving high in the southern Tasman sea will maintain a ridge through western and northern Queensland through the remainder of this week. An upper level low is expected to move northeast across the southeast of the state during today, before moving out to sea during the evening and into Thursday. Forecast for the rest of WednesdayScattered showers and thunderstorms developing over areas east of about Gladstone to Goondiwindi, with isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms through the remainder east of Biloela to St George. Possible afternoon showers through the southern Maranoa and Warrego. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Strong winds developing late in the day off the southeast Queensland coast, with a powerful southeasterly swell continuing to push into southern Queensland waters. Mostly moderate southwest to southeast winds elsewhere, fresh at times during the morning in the northwest.Fire Danger - Very High Fire Danger through the central districts, the eastern tropics and the Gulf Country districts.Thursday 28 AugustThe upper low will contract east away from the southern Queensland coast, while the surface low is likely to continue to move slowly south over the northern Tasman Sea. Some instability will persist about the far southeast of the state with isolated showers possible southeast of about Hervey Bay to Goondiwindi. These showers should become less likely during the afternoon and evening as the upper low moves further out to sea. A ridge will extend through much of western and northern Queensland with fine and mostly sunny conditions expected. Strong winds and a powerful south to southeasterly swell are likely to continue over southern Queensland waters. Early frost areas are likely on the Atherton Tablelands.Friday 29 AugustThe upper low and surface low pressure system should both continue to slowly contract further to the southeast into the central Tasman Sea. The ridge will strengthen and dominate the state. Fine and sunny conditions expected across much of Queensland, with just the chance of some isolated showers over the exposed coast and islands of southeastern Queensland and also about the central and tropical coasts. Early frosts are again possible through the southern central interior and the Atherton tablelands.Saturday 30 AugustThe upper low and the surface low are expected to move southeast towards New Zealand. The ridge will maintain fine and sunny conditions across most of Queensland, with only isolated light showers possible about tropical coast in a weak onshore flow. Early frosts are again possible about the southern and central interior of the state.Sunday until TuesdayThe surface low will continue to move southeast and weaken. The ridge will drift slowly to the east, before weakening about the southeast Queensland coast on Monday. This ridge will lead to fine and sunny conditions across much of the state, with only isolated light showers possible about the tropical coast in a weak onshore flow. A weak surface trough is expected to push into southwestern Queensland during Monday and cross the south of the state on Tuesday. Isolated showers are possible about the southern border with the passage of the trough. Early frosts will possibly persist until Monday about the southern and central interior of the state due to a dry airmass.
