Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 26/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A complex low pressure system lies offshore over the far southern Coral Sea and is expected to shift south into the northern Tasman Sea during the forecast period. A slow moving high pressure system extending from the southern Tasman sea will maintain a ridge through western and northern Queensland through the remainder of this week. An upper level low is expected to move north into the far southern interior of Queensland during today before shifting east over southeast districts on Wednesday, moving eastwards out of southeast Queensland early Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of TuesdayIsolated to scattered showers are expected southeast of about Hervey Bay to Cunnamulla, more frequent with isolated thunderstorms through the southern Darling Downs and Granite Belt. The remainder of the state should remain fine and mostly clear. Fresh southerly winds and a powerful east to southeasterly swell are expected over far southern Queensland waters. Mostly moderate southwest to southeast winds elsewhere, fresh at times during the morning in the northwest.Wednesday 27 AugustScattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over areas southeast of about Gladstone to St George, with showers tending to rain areas about the southern Darling Downs and southern Southeast Coast district. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. A low pressure system over the northern Tasman Sea should deepen in response to an upper low, extending strong winds and a powerful southeasterly swell into far southern Queensland waters. Mostly moderate southwest to southeast winds elsewhere, fresh at times during the morning in the northwest. Early frost is possible on the Atherton Tablelands and through the Maranoa.Fire Danger -  Very High Fire Danger for the Gulf Country district.Thursday 28 AugustThe upper low will contract east away from the southern Queensland coast, while the surface low is likely to continue to move slowly south over the northern Tasman Sea. Some instability will persist about the far southeast of the state with isolated showers possible southeast of about Hervey Bay to Goondiwindi. These showers should become less likely during the afternoon as the upper low moves further out to sea. A ridge will extend through much of western and northern Queensland with fine and mostly sunny conditions expected. Strong winds and a powerful south to southeasterly swell are likely to continue over southern Queensland waters. Early frosts are likely on the Atherton Tablelands.Friday 29 AugustThe upper low and surface low pressure system should both continue to slowly contract further to the southeast into the central Tasman Sea. The ridge will strengthen and dominate the state. Fine and sunny conditions expected across much of Queensland, with just the chance of some isolated showers over the exposed coast and islands of southeastern Queensland and also about the central and tropical coasts. Early frosts are again possible through the southern central interior and the Atherton tablelands.Saturday 30 AugustThe upper low and the surface low are expected to move southeast towards New Zealand. The ridge will maintain fine and sunny conditions across most of Queensland, with only isolated light showers possible about the Central and Tropical coasts in a weak onshore flow. Early frosts will possibly persist about the southern and central interior of the state.Sunday until TuesdayThe upper low will weaken and the surface low will continue to move southeast. The ridge will drift slowly to the east over the outlook period, with a weak surface trough developing over inland Queensland during Monday. This ridge will lead to fine and sunny conditions across much of the state, with only isolated light showers possible about the Central and Tropical coasts in a weak onshore flow. Early frosts will possibly persist about the southern and central interior of the state due to a dry airmass.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Wednesday.Product IDQ10700
