Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 16/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
An upper level low lies over northern New South Wales and is expected to move east-southeastwards during the weekend before entering the Tasman Sea on Monday. An associated surface trough and rain band over far southeastern Queensland will contract offshore early on Sunday morning. Cold west to southwesterly winds will extend through western, central and southern Queensland in the wake of the trough. A high will develop in the Great Australian Bight today and move slowly eastwards over the next few days, extending a ridge through much of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of SundayA band of rain and isolated thunderstorms over far southeast Queensland will contract off the coast early in the morning with fine and mostly sunny conditions extending from the west during the morning. Patchy cloudy and isolated showers about the southern interior, most likely near the New South Wales border. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere with only possible isolated showers about the northeast tropical coast. Moderate to fresh and gusty south to southwesterly winds in the west of the state. Moderate to fresh and gusty west to southwest winds elsewhere. Cool over much of the interior.Monday 18 AugustThe upper low is expected to move east into the Tasman Sea during the day, resulting in the deepening of a surface low pressure system off the New South Wales coast. A high in the Great Australian Bight will extend a ridge through much of Queensland. The combination of these two systems will extend cold, fresh west to southwesterly winds into southern Queensland. Cloud cover, isolated shower activity and gusty winds will result in a cold day over the Maranoa and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Mostly fine conditions are expected in the tropics with just the chance of isolated showers about the far northeastern Peninsula. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere under the ridge of high pressure.Tuesday 19 AugustThe low in the Tasman Sea will shift further east with winds easing over southeastern Queensland. Some cloud cover will likely persist near the southeast inland border with possible isolated showers. The high will strengthen over the Great Australian Bight and extend a ridge into remaining parts of Queensland. Mostly fine conditions are therefore expected with only isolated showers over the northern Peninsula. Some early frosts are likely through the central and southeast interior.Wednesday 20 AugustThe high in the Great Australian Bight will slowly strengthen as it moves eastwards, strengthening the ridge through Queensland. Isolated showers are possible over southern Queensland as the next upper trough is likely to develop over New South Wales. Isolated showers are possible over the northern Peninsula in the onshore wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Early frosts are likely for the central and southeastern interior.Thursday until SaturdayThe high will slowly strengthen as it moves eastwards across the Tasman Sea during the outlook period. The high will maintain a fresh to strong onshore flow along the east coast of Queensland. Moisture will therefore gradually build along the east coast. An upper trough may move eastwards across the south of the state during the outlook period with isolated showers possibly extending a little further west into the central and southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Sunday.Product IDQ10700
