Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 16/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
An upper level low lies near the southwestern Queensland border and is expected to continue moving east southeast over New South Wales during the weekend before entering the Tasman Sea on Monday. An associated surface trough and rain band will also slip east southeast over southeastern Queensland today before clearing the southern Queensland coast during Sunday morning. Cold west to southwesterly winds will extend through western, central and southern Queensland in the wake of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of SaturdayRain areas and isolated thunderstorms contracting out of the Central Highlands and the eastern Maranoa and extending throughout the southeastern corner of the state. Locally heavy falls are possible. Showers and gusty thunderstorms in the wake of the rain band will clear to the east with the surface trough this evening. Isolated to scattered showers over the eastern and far northern tropics. Isolated showers in the southwest, tending scattered near the New South Wales border with isolated thunderstorms. Fine in the northwest. Moderate to fresh and gusty northeasterly winds over southern central and southeast districts. Moderate to fresh mostly south to southwesterly winds elsewhere.Sunday 17 AugustThe upper low is expected to move further east southeast over New South Wales while the associated surface trough and thundery rain band will contract east over southeastern Queensland and clear the southern Queensland coast during the morning. Locally heavy falls are possible. Some low cloud will persist through the southern interior with isolated showers, more widespread near the New South Wales border. A new high will move east over South Australia, extending a weak ridge and an onshore wind flow into the eastern tropics north of Townsville with possible isolated showers expected. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere with possible early frost over the central interior and Maranoa. Moderate to fresh and gusty northeasterly winds in the far southeast of the state, decreasing to moderate westerlies during the morning. Moderate to fresh south to southwesterly winds in the west of the state, tending moderate west to southwest elsewhere.Monday 18 AugustThe upper low is expected to move east into the Tasman Sea during the day, resulting in the deepening of a surface low pressure system. This will extend a cold, fresh west to southwesterly wind flow into southern Queensland. Cloud cover, isolated shower activity and gusty winds will result in a cold day over the Maranoa and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Mostly fine conditions are expected in the tropics with just the chance of isolated showers about the far northeastern Peninsula. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere under a ridge of high pressure.Tuesday 19 AugustThe low in the Tasman Sea will shift further east, relaxing winds over southeastern Queensland. Some cloud cover will likely persist near the southeast inland border with possible isolated showers. A new high will strengthen over the Great Australian Bight and extend a ridge into remaining parts of Queensland. Mostly fine conditions are therefore expected with only isolated showers over the northern Peninsula. Some early frosts are likely through the central and southeast interior.Wednesday 20 AugustThe high in the Great Australian Bight will slowly strengthen as it moves east over southern Australia to lie near Tasmania, strengthening the ridge. Isolated showers are possible over southern Queensland in an unstable southerly wind flow, with possible isolated showers over the northern Peninsula in the southeasterlies. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Early frosts likely for the southeastern interior.Thursday until SaturdayThe high near Tasmania will slowly strengthen as it moves east into the Tasman Sea during the outlook period, gradually strengthening the ridge and bringing fresh to strong southeasterly winds along the east Queensland coast. Moisture will therefore gradually build along the east coast, with isolated showers developing and possibly extending a little further west into the central and southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Sunday.Product IDQ10700
