MELBOURNE - Jul 16/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A strong cold front is situated in the Bight and will reach the west of Victoria early on Thursday, crossing to the east of the State by Thursday night. An associated low pressure cell will cross Tasmania during Thursday to lie east of Bass strait on Friday morning then move rapidly eastward over the Tasman Sea. A strong high pressure system will be situated just west of Victoria by late Friday, moving to the far east of the State by Sunday morning, then become slow moving. Forecast for the rest of WednesdayIsolated showers about the northern slopes of the Dividing Range and in the southwest, tending scattered in the evening and extending further into southern Victoria. The chance of hail or a thunderstorm in the far southwest. Snowfalls down to 1300 metres. Moderate to fresh north to northwesterly winds.Thursday 17 JulyScattered showers and local hail, with snow down to 600 metres. Showers more widespread near the coast and about the eastern ranges. The chance of thunderstorms in the south. A cold day with fresh to strong northwesterly winds shifting squally strong west to southwesterly in the morning and afternoon, reaching gale force along parts of the coast.Friday 18 JulyScattered showers near the coast and in the east. Isolated showers in remaining southern and mountain districts, generally dry in the north. Snow down to 700 metres in the morning, increasing to 1200 metres at night. A cold day with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, strong at first near the coast though gradually moderating from the west.Saturday 19 JulyIsolated showers or drizzle over the southeast and the Otways, contracting to the far southeast by the afternoon. A generally cold day with light to moderate southeast to southwesterly winds.Sunday 20 JulyIsolated light showers about the west coast, clearing in the morning. Mostly sunny for the remainder, with morning fog and frost patches inland.
