MELBOURNE - Jun 23/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation An intense low pressure system will cross Bass Strait this morning and early afternoon. A high pressure system will ridge over inland NSW and northern Victoria on Wednesday, ahead of the next cold front expected to reach the western border on Wednesday night and then cross the State on Thursday. Another cold front will cross the Bight on Friday with an associated low pressure system crossing waters south of the Bight. Forecast for the rest of TuesdayShowers, more frequent in the south and about the eastern ranges but tending isolated over the East Gippsland and the far northwest. Showers tending to rain across the ranges and southwest during the morning and early afternoon. Local hail in the east this morning. Isolated thunderstorms near the coast. Snowfalls down to 700 metres, rising to 1200 metres in the evening with blizzard conditions continuing over Alpine areas. Cool to cold with strong northwest winds, shifting squally west to southwesterly during the day and reaching gale force at times in the south.Wednesday 25 JuneScattered showers near and south of the ranges tending more extensive over the northeast and near the central and western coasts. Isolated thunderstorms possible near the Gippsland coast in the morning. Showers easing during the day but increasing again in the southwest towards the evening with isolated thunderstorm possible near the western coast. Only isolated showers in the far northwest and over East Gippsland. Snow down to 1200 metres, rising to 1400 metres by the evening. Remaining cool to cold with fresh to strong west to northwest winds, reaching gale force over Alpine areas and parts of the coast.Thursday 26 JuneScattered showers near and south of the ranges with isolated showers elsewhere. Showers contracting to the coast and east ranges during the afternoon. Local hail and thunder in the south, mainly near the coast and during the morning. Snow down to 1400 metres. Fresh to strong west to northwest winds tending reaching gale force at times along the coastal fringe and Alpine areas.Friday 27 JuneIsolated showers near and south of the ranges, mostly clearing by late morning but showers redeveloping over the southwest in the afternoon and reaching central districts by the evening. Showers falling as snow above 1500 metres.
