MELBOURNE - May 23/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high [1023 hPa] in the Tasman Sea extends a weak high ridge of high pressure along Queensland's east coast which is expected to weaken further during the weekend. An upper level trough will move eastwards across the south of the state today and move off the east coast during early Saturday morning. Forecast for the rest of FridayScattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the central and southern interior and extending into the southeast interior during the afternoon. Isolated showers and thunderstorms extending into the far southeast during the late evening. Isolated showers elsewhere about the east coast and eastern interior, more frequent about the northeast coast. Fine and mostly sunny over the northwest of the state. Moderate to fresh southeast winds about the tropical east coast. Light to moderate southeast to northeast winds elsewhere.Saturday 24 MayEarly morning showers and possible thunderstorms over the far southeast, clearing offshore during the early hours of the morning. Isolated early fog patches over the east of the state, south of about Townsville. Isolated showers over the far northeast coast, becoming less likely during the day. A fine and sunny day over most of the state, except for the far northeastern tropics. Moderate to fresh southeast winds about the tropical east coast. Light to moderate southwest to southeast winds elsewhere. Maximum temperatures will be several degrees above average over the southwest and southern interior.Fire Danger - High over the eastern interior. Low to moderate over the remainder.Sunday 25 MayA weak high will remain over southeast Queensland with dry air across much of Queensland keeping most of the state fine and mostly sunny. The weak onshore flow over the northeast coast may produce some isolated morning showers but most places should remain fine. Maximum temperatures will be several degrees above average over the west and southern interior.Monday 26 MayThe high should move into the Tasman Sea and strengthen with a ridge extending along the east coast of Queensland. Dry air will persist over much of the state maintaining fine and sunny conditions across most of Queensland except for some isolated showers about parts of the east coast. Maximum temperatures will be several degrees above average over the west and southern interior.Tuesday 27 MayThe high should move further to the east to be located near New Zealand, with a weakening ridge persisting along the Queensland east coast. Isolated showers will develop about the east coast and adjacent inland as the flow tends more onshore. An upper trough will cross the southern interior of the state during the day leading to isolated showers and possible thunderstorms through the southwest. Elsewhere dry conditions should result in a fine and mostly sunny day, with maximum temperatures several degrees above the average over the west and southern interior.Wednesday until FridayThe high in the Tasman Sea will move slowly eastwards and weaken the ridge along the east coast. A new high will develop over the southwest of the continent on Thursday and strengthen during Friday, while moving east. Isolated showers are expected about the east coast in the weakening onshore flow. A series of upper troughs will cross the south of the state during the outlook period, bringing isolated showers to the southern Queensland.
