Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 19/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system over the Tasman Sea and an associated ridge over eastern Queensland are expected to weaken further during Tuesday. A new high is expected to develop over southeastern Australian on Wednesday and should move into the Tasman Sea late on Wednesday and during Thursday, maintaining the ridge along the east coast of Queensland. An upper level trough over western Queensland will move eastwards over the southern interior on Tuesday and contract off the southeast coast on Wednesday.
Forecast for the rest of MondayIsolated to scattered showers over eastern districts north of about Fraser Island, more frequent about the east tropical coast. Patchy cloud extending through western and central Queensland though with only isolated light showers. Moderate to fresh and gusty southeasterly winds about the east coast north of Fraser Island. Light to moderate southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere.Tuesday 20 MayIsolated showers about much of the east Queensland coast and nearby inland areas north of the Sunshine Coast with more frequent showers about the east tropical coast. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the southern interior. Mostly fine elsewhere about the state with only very isolated showers. Moderate to fresh and gusty southeasterly winds about the east coast north of St. Lawrence. Light to moderate southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere.Wednesday 21 MayThe new high over southeastern Australia will strengthen and shift east into the Tasman Sea late in the day, reinforcing the ridge along the east Queensland coast. Isolated to scattered showers will occur about eastern districts in the onshore wind flow, mostly north of about Fraser Island. The upper level trough will contract east off the southern coast, stabilising conditions over the state with just the chance of isolated light showers over the interior east of about Longreach. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will occur in the west.Thursday 22 MayThe high should shift a little further east through the Tasman Sea, extending moist onshore winds into much of eastern and far northern Queensland. Isolated showers are expected about much of the east coast, more frequent near the central and east tropical coasts. The interior should be fine and partly cloudy under the stabilising influence of the ridge.Friday 23 MayThe high in the Tasman Sea will move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea with the ridge along the east coast weakening. Isolated showers should persist about much of the east coast in the onshore flow. An upper level trough will move east over the interior of the state, most likely enhancing the shower activity over the southern interior and southeastern districts with possible thunderstorms.Saturday until MondayA ridge of high pressure is expected to lie across southern Queensland through the outlook period and the upper trough should contract off the southeast coast during Saturday. The ridge will maintain moist onshore winds along much of the east coast with isolated showers, most likely north of Fraser Island. Dry air over the interior of the state will lead to fine and mostly sunny conditions. The next trough is likely to approach the far southwest of the state on Monday and maximum temperatures in the southwest and southern interior are expected to be above average during the outlook period in the warm air ahead of this trough. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700
