MELBOURNE - Apr 19/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A surface trough extends from the Gulf Country towards the southern interior of Queensland. Another trough lies to the north of Cape York Peninsula. A high pressure system over southeastern Australia is moving slowly eastwards, and extends a ridge through Queensland. A relatively dry airmass is in place across most of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of SundayFine and sunny over most of the state. Isolated showers about the north tropical coast and into the far northwest. Scattered showers with isolated thunderstorms over the far north. Light to moderate southeast to northeast winds, fresh at times over northern Queensland.Monday 21 AprilThe high will move into the Tasman Sea, and combined with the dry airmass it should maintain fine and mostly sunny conditions across most of Queensland. The trough over the far north should continue to produce scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the northern Peninsula.Tuesday 22 AprilMoist easterly flow combined with the slow moving trough over the far north will continue to produce at least scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should also occur over the remainder of the northern tropics as an upper trough moves into western Queensland. More isolated showers are likely to continue along the tropical east coast.Wednesday 23 AprilMoist easterly flow will combine with the weakening surface trough over the far north of the state, producing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. The upper trough should move into eastern Queensland while weakening, with showers along parts of the east coast, mainly in the central and tropical areas. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the remainder of northern Queensland.Thursday until SaturdayShowers and isolated thunderstorms should begin to taper off as the trough over the far north weakens. The next stronger upper trough will move through southern Queensland on Thursday and Friday. This feature will lead to showers returning to the southern Queensland coast in the onshore flow, and may also lead to isolated showers and possibly a thunderstorm or two over the southern inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms generally continuing in the northern tropics.
