Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 11/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita lies over the northwest Coral Sea and is forecast to cross the far north tropical Queensland coast later today. The forecast movement of Ita is then towards the southeast over the weekend and then off the southern tropical coast. A surface trough over the Channel Country will gradually move eastwards across the southern districts, shifting into the southeast corner on Saturday. An upper level trough will move over the southwest of the state today and through southeastern parts on Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of FridayForecasts for northern Queensland are highly dependent upon the development and movement of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita. Rain areas, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, heavy at times, with damaging and destructive winds about the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and part of the Peninsula district. Very destructive wind gusts are likely near the core of the system. Mainly scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the far northern interior and the remainder of the tropical east. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the southern and southeastern interior. Isolated showers over coastal parts of the Southeast Coast and Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Light to moderate southeast to southwest winds over the remainder of the tropics and the western districts, tending northeast to northwest over the southeast and southern and central interior.Saturday 12 AprilForecasts for northern Queensland are highly dependent upon the development and movement of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita. Rain areas, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, heavy at times, with damaging and destructive winds about the northeast tropical areas, extending southwards to the central coast areas during the day. Very destructive wind gusts are likely near the core of the system. Mainly scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the far northern interior and the remainder of the tropical and central east. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the southeast and southern interior. Fine and dry in the west. Light to moderate southeast to southwest winds over the remainder of the tropics and the western districts, tending northeast to northwest over the southeast and southern and central interior.Sunday 13 AprilForecasts for northern and central Queensland through the outlook period will remain highly dependent on the movement of the remnants of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita, however the present information indicates patchy rain areas, showers and thunderstorms are likely over the eastern tropics and through central districts, with heavy rainfall likely for coastal and adjacent inland parts between Cairns and Gladstone. Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms about surrounding areas of the tropical and central interior. Showers and storms over the Peninsula district. Meanwhile further south, an upper trough will strengthen as it moves east over southeast Queensland, producing showers and storms over the region.Monday 14 AprilForecasts for northern and central Queensland through the outlook period will remain highly dependent on the movement of the remnants of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita, however the present information shows rain areas clearing the Central and Capricornia region as the system moves offshore. Isolated to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Isolated shower activity over the remaining eastern and adjacent districts, tending more scattered near the coast. The central and western interior should remain fine and mostly sunny.Tuesday 15 AprilForecasts for northern and central Queensland through the outlook period will remain highly dependent on the movement of the remnants of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita, however the present information shows that showers may continue over the eastern districts, tending scattered about parts of the southeast. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the northern tropics and also into the southern and central interior.Wednesday until FridayAnother upper trough is expected to move through western Queensland on Wednesday and continue moving eastwards. Unstable conditions expected through eastern areas of the state, with showers and isolated thunderstorms expected.
