Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 10/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita lies over the northwest Coral Sea and is expected to strengthen further to at least a high category 4 system as it approaches the east coast of Far North Queensland. The system is currently expected to cross the coast between Cape Sidmouth and Cape Tribulation late on Friday. A surface trough over the Channel Country will gradually move eastwards across the southern districts, combining with a series of upper level troughs to produce storms over parts of the southern districts during the next few days.
Forecast for the rest of ThursdayShowers and the chance of thunderstorms increasing over the northern tropics, and spreading to rain overnight about the eastern North Tropical and Peninsula district coasts. Isolated showers about the remainder of the eastern tropics. Fine and mostly clear over the remainder of the state apart for some cloudy periods and isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far southwest. Light to moderate southeast to northeast winds across most of the state, becoming fresh to strong about the northeast coast. Moderate to fresh southwesterly winds developing over the western interior.Friday 11 AprilThe forecasts for northern Queensland are highly dependent upon the development and movement of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita. At this stage the most likely scenario is for the tropical cyclone to make landfall on the Peninsula north of Cooktown in the late evening, generating heavy rain areas, isolated thunderstorms and damaging to destructive winds over parts of the Peninsula district and the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands district. Very destructive wind gusts are likely near the core of the system. Mainly scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the far northern interior and the remainder of the tropical east. An upper trough will work with a surface trough to produce showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior. Light to moderate southeast to southwest winds over the remainder of the tropics and the western districts, tending northeast to northwest over the southeast and southern and central interior.Saturday 12 AprilForecasts for northern Queensland will remain highly dependent on the movement and intensity of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita. The most likely scenario is for the system to gradually weaken to below cyclone strength as it moves southwards over the northern interior, producing very destructive wind gusts, areas of heavy rain, squally showers and storms over the northern tropics. A new upper trough is expected to enter the southern interior and produce showers and storms over the southern interior and the state's southeast. Fine and dry in the west.Sunday 13 AprilForecasts for northern and central Queensland through the outlook period will remain highly dependent on the movement of the remnants of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita, however the present information indicates showers and thunderstorms are likely over the eastern tropics, with heavy rainfall likely between the northern Capricorn Coast and the North Tropical Coast. Meanwhile further south, the upper trough will strengthen as it moves east over southeast Queensland, producing showers and storms over the region.Monday 14 AprilForecasts for northern and central Queensland through the outlook period will remain highly dependent on the movement of the remnants of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita, however the present information shows rain areas clearing the Central and Capricornia region as the system moves offshore. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics, with isolated shower activity over the remaining eastern and adjacent districts. The central and western interior should remain fine and mostly sunny.Tuesday until ThursdayForecasts for northern and central Queensland through the outlook period will remain highly dependent on the movement of the remnants of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita, however the present information shows that showers may continue over the eastern districts next week, whilst the interior should be fine and mostly sunny. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Friday.Product IDQ10700
