Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 9/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita currently lies just off the southeastern tip of Papua New Guinea, and is likely to move west southwest over the northern Coral Sea, and make landfall on Cape York Peninsula during Friday. Forecasts for far northern Queensland are highly dependent on the movement of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita from Thursday.
A high in the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along much of the east Queensland coast. The ridge will gradually weaken from today as the high moves east towards New Zealand. A surface trough lies near the far southwestern border, and will move slowly eastwards in the next few days.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayScattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula. Scattered showers about the east tropical coast. Isolated showers over the remaining east coast and adjacent inland. Possible afternoon and evenings showers or thunderstorms near the southwestern border though with little or no rain. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Moderate to fresh southeasterly winds along the east coast, strong at times north of Cairns. Light to moderate southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere, fresh at times over the interior during the day.Thursday 10 AprilShowers increasing with isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics during the day. Isolated showers along the remainder of the east coast north of Fraser Island. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southwest. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere in the state. Light to moderate southeast to northeast winds, becoming fresh to strong about the northeast coast. Moderate to fresh southwesterly winds developing over the far southwest.Friday 11 AprilThe forecasts for northern Queensland are highly dependent upon the development and movement of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita. At this stage the most likely scenario is for the tropical cyclone to make landfall on the Peninsula north of Cooktown in the evening, generating heavy rain areas, isolated thunderstorms and damaging to destructive winds with its passage. Rain and storms should also extend through the North Tropical Coast with some heavy falls. Showers and possible storms are expected through the southern tropics. An upper trough and an associated surface trough will move east over the southern interior, generating isolated showers and thunderstorms.Saturday 12 AprilForecasts for northern Queensland will remain highly dependent on the movement and intensity of Tropical Cyclone Ita. The most likely scenario is for the system to move over the interior and start curving to s south-southeasterly track. A moist airmass should persist through the tropics, with showers, rain areas and storms, most likely extending further south to the central coast during the day. A new upper trough is expected to enter the southern interior, greatly increasing instability through the southern and southeast inland with showers and storms expected. Some of this activity may reach the southeast coast late in the day. The far west should remain mostly fine under a dry airmass.Sunday 13 AprilForecasts for northern and central Queensland through the outlook period will remain highly dependent on the movement of Tropical Cyclone Ita. The new upper trough will move east over southeastern Queensland during Sunday, generating showers and storms with its passage.Monday until WednesdayForecasts for northern and central Queensland through the outlook period will remain highly dependent on the movement of Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita. Showers and thunderstorms are likely over the northern and eastern tropics, with a few showers along the remaining east coast. It should be fine in the west. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Thursday.Product IDQ10700
