Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 26/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high in the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the southern Queensland coast. The high will shift east towards New Zealand during the forecast period, gradually relaxing the ridge. A low level trough and an associated cloud band extends from the central interior into the Maranoa and Warrego district and is expected to intensify during Thursday as an upper trough builds into Queensland. The troughs should then shift southeast during Friday, contracting the cloud band off the southern Queensland coast late Friday afternoon or evening. A surface trough lies offshore of the east tropical and central coasts and is expected to shift west inland on Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayRain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the far southern tropics, central and southeast districts and the southern interior, with some moderate to locally heavy falls likely. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms over the remaining tropics and into western Queensland, though fine and partly cloudy in the far west. Light to moderate southeast to northeast winds, fresh and gusty about the Capricorn and southern Queensland coasts. Moderate to fresh southerly winds in the far west.Thursday 27 MarchRain areas and isolated thunderstorms through the southern interior east of about Mitchell and over central and southeast districts, with some moderate to locally heavy falls likely. Fine and partly cloudy through the northwest and northern Channel Country districts. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms over remaining parts of the state, tending more widespread though the tropics. Cooler than average maximum temperatures expected through central and southeast districts. Light to moderate southeast to northeast winds, fresh and gusty about the southern Queensland coast. Moderate to fresh southerly winds in the far west.Friday 28 MarchThe high in the Tasman Sea is expected to drift slowly southeast to be near New Zealand, relaxing the ridge along the central and southern Queensland coast. The upper level trough is expected to weaken as it shifts eastwards across New South Wales. The associated cloud band with thundery rain areas and locally heavy falls should move southeast through the southeastern corner of Queensland, contracting off the coast late afternoon or evening. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected in the far west. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will occur over much of the remainder of the state due to a surface trough persisting from the northwest into the southern interior. Cooler than average maximum temperatures are expected through southeastern parts of the state.Saturday 29 MarchThe high is expected to remain near New Zealand, maintaining a ridge along the northern tropical coast. The surface trough should remain slow moving over the interior of the state with a humid and unstable airmass to its east and north. Showers and thunderstorms are therefore likely to develop near and to the east of the surface trough over northern and eastern districts. Mostly fine conditions will occur through the central and southern interior with only the chance of some isolated showers. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected through the west.Sunday 30 MarchThe high is expected to remain slow moving and should be located to the east of New Zealand. The surface trough is likely to shift into the far west of the state with a humid and unstable airmass persisting to its north and east. Showers and thunderstorms are therefore likely to continue over northern and eastern districts, and also extending further west into parts of western districts. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere.Monday until WednesdayThe high is likely to remain near New Zealand, with showers expected along the east coast in the onshore wind flow. The surface trough is expected to remain over the southwest of the state and a new upper level trough may enter the southwest on Tuesday and shift eastwards across southern districts on Wednesday. The upper level trough should help to trigger showers and thunderstorms over the interior, near to the east of the surface trough. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Thursday.Product IDQ10700
