Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 12/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
Ex-tropical cyclone Gillian lies over southern parts of the Gulf of Carpentaria and is expected to move in a general westerly direction before shifting northwestwards on Friday and possibly reintensifying. Forecasts for the Gulf of Carpentaria coast are highly dependent on the movement of ex-tropical cyclone Gillian. A high near New Zealand extends a weakening ridge along the southern and central Queensland coast. An upper trough will approach the southwest of the state late today and move eastwards across the south of the state during Friday.
Forecast for the rest of ThursdayScattered to widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Isolated to scattered showers about the southern tropical and central coasts. Mostly fine about the southern coast, only some very isolated showers mainly in the evening. Isolated showers and thunderstorms near the southwest border late in the day. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Moderate to fresh southwest to northwesterly winds in the far north. Moderate to fresh and gusty east to southeasterly winds elsewhere.Fire Danger - Very High in the Central Highlands and Coalfields and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.Friday 14 MarchA weak ridge should persist about the east coast with very isolated showers in the onshore flow, becoming more widespread and frequent about the northeast tropical coast with possible isolated thunderstorms. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur across the remainder of the northern tropics. The upper trough is expected to move east over the southern interior of the state, generating isolated to scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms across the southern and southeast interior, possibly extending into the Central West district and the Carnarvon Range, and possibly developing over the southern ranges in the southeast. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere.Saturday 15 MarchThe upper trough is expected to contract off the southeast coast. The ridge along the east tropical and central coast should weaken further with only isolated showers expected. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur across the far north of the state. A new trough will approach the southwest of the state late in the day, generating showers and gusty storms near the southwestern border. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected over the remaining interior. Temperatures should increase through the south and west of the state, particularly near the southwestern border, in the warm northerly wind flow ahead of the new trough.Sunday 16 MarchThe next upper trough is expected to move through southern Queensland, generating isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior, possibly reaching the southeast interior late. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over the far north of the state, and more isolated over the northwest. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Warm to hot temperatures from the northwest to the southeast of the state.Monday until WednesdayThe upper trough is likely to move off the southern coast during Monday, and slowly shift northwards. Showers and possible isolated thunderstorms are expected in southeastern districts on Monday, and shifting to central Queensland on Tuesday. Isolated showers are likely to continue about the east coast, while scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur across the northern tropics, though this activity should gradually decrease during the outlook period. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Thursday.Product IDQ10700
