Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 10/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
Tropical cyclone Hadi lies over the western Coral Sea well off the Queensland east coast and is expected to continue to move northeastwards. Ex-Tropical cyclone Gillian lies over land on the east Gulf of Carpentaria coast and is expected to move southwest over water later today. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gillian should continue moving southwest on Wednesday whilst deepening. Forecasts for the Gulf of Carpentaria coast are highly dependent on the movement of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gillian. A high moving east across the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the southern and central Queensland coast. The ridge is expected to weaken during Wednesday and Thursday as the high moves to the southeast of New Zealand. An upper trough will approach the southwest of the state late Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of TuesdayForecasts about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast are highly dependent on the development and movement of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gillian. Thundery rain with possible heavy falls about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast between about Arukun and Normanton. Scattered squally showers about the Central Coast, decreasing during the day. Showers increasing about the northeast tropical coast during the day with possible isolated thunderstorms developing. Scattered to widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remaining tropics with more isolated shower activity about the North West district. Isolated showers over the southern coast, extending inland to the ranges. Showers tending scattered about the far southeast during the morning and early afternoon. Fine and mostly sunny conditions the southern interior. Moderate to fresh southwest to northwesterly winds in the far north. Moderate to fresh east to southeasterly winds elsewhere, strong and gusty about the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria coast and the east coast between Cairns and Agnes Water.Fire Danger -  Very high in the Gulf Country and the Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.Wednesday 12 MarchForecasts about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast are highly dependent on the development and movement of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gillian. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics, more frequent with rain areas and possible locally heavy falls near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Isolated to scattered showers will occur in the fresh onshore wind flow about the southern tropical and central coasts. The high in the Tasman Sea should move to the southeast of New Zealand, resulting in the ridge along the southern Queensland coast relaxing with only isolated showers expected. Conditions should be fine and mostly sunny over the southern interior.Thursday 13 MarchTropical Cyclone Gillian may still be active through the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, with forecasts about the northwest of the state, particularly near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast, highly dependent on this system. Showers should decrease about the northeast tropical coast though remain scattered about the southern tropical and central coasts. Scattered to widespread showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected through the remaining tropics, still possibly more frequent with some heavy falls near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Conditions should be mostly fine about the Capricornia and southeast of the state with just the chance of isolated showers under the weak ridge. A new upper trough will most likely approach the southwest of the state, generating isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms near the southwest border.Friday 14 MarchA weak ridge should persist about the east coast with isolated showers in the onshore flow, becoming more frequent about the northeast tropical coast with possible isolated thunderstorms. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur across the remainder of the northern tropics. The upper trough is expected to move east over the southern interior of the state, generating isolated to scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms across the southwest and southern interior and possibly extending into the Central West district. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere.Saturday until MondayThe upper trough should contract into the southeast of the state on Saturday with isolated showers and thunderstorms across the southern interior and southeast of the state. Another upper trough is likely to move across the state during Sunday and Monday with a band of showers and isolated thunderstorms moving eastwards across the south of the state. Isolated showers are likely to continue about the east coast, while scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur across the northern tropics, though this activity should gradually decrease during the outlook period.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700
