Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 8/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A tropical low lies over the western Coral Sea and is expected to deepen as it moves south southwest, most likely approaching the southern tropical coast late on Sunday. Another developing tropical low lies in the north of the Gulf of Carpentaria and is expected to move towards the southeast, approaching the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula late on Sunday or early Monday. Forecasts for the tropics and central coast of Queensland will be highly dependent on the development and movement of these lows. A high will move slowly eastwards over the Tasman Sea during the forecast period, maintaining a firm ridge along the southern east coast. An upper trough will move east over the southern interior on Sunday, most likely contracting off the southeast Queensland coast during Monday.
Forecast for the rest of SaturdayScattered showers about the east tropical and north central coasts, increasing to rain areas late tonight with possible isolated thunderstorms developing. Showers also extending to the adjacent inland areas during the evening. Showers and scattered thunderstorms through Torres Strait and far northern Cape York Peninsula, with heavy rain areas possibly developing late tonight. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere about the Peninsula district. Isolated showers about the far southeast and Capricornia. Isolated showers and possible gusty thunderstorms in the southwest. Moderate southeast to northeast winds about the interior. Strong and gusty southeast winds about the tropical and central east coast increasing further during the evening. Moderate southeast winds in the southeast.Sunday 9 MarchForecasts are highly dependent on the development and movement of the tropical lows/cyclones. Rain areas and thunderstorms developing over the coast and eastern interior between about Cairns to St Lawrence, with some heavy falls likely about the coastal fringe. Patchy rain or light showers extending further inland to the central west during the day. Rain areas and thunderstorms with some heavy falls through Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere about the northern tropics. Isolated to scattered showers about the southeast. Isolated showers and possible gusty thunderstorms in the far southwest, mostly during the afternoon. Gales developing about the east coast from about Cairns to St. Lawrence and also about the west coast of Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait Islands (possibly storm force late in the day). Moderate to fresh and gusty east to southeast winds elsewhere.Fire Danger - Very High over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district.Monday 10 MarchForecasts remain highly dependent on the development and movement of the tropical systems. Rain areas and thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely about the east coast and adjacent inland between about Cardwell and Gladstone, and also through the northern Peninsula. Showers and rain areas are likely to extend further west into eastern parts of the southern tropical and central interior, with more patchy light rain extending through to the central west. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected through the remaining tropics. The passage of an upper trough will result in showers increasing over the southeast of the state and extending further west through the southeastern interior. Mostly sunny conditions will occur in the southwest.Tuesday 11 MarchForecasts continue to be highly dependent on the development and movement of the tropical systems. The high in the Tasman Sea should maintain a ridge along the southern Queensland coast. At this stage it is likely that rain areas and possible thunderstorms will continue about the central and southern tropical coasts and adjacent inland with some heavy falls possible. This activity could extend north towards the northeast tropical coast during the day. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the remaining tropics, with some isolated shower activity most likely extending through the tropical interior and northwest of the state. Conditions will stabilise over the southeast following the passage of the upper trough with only isolated showers expected. Fine and mostly sunny conditions should occur through the southern interior.Wednesday 12 MarchForecasts continue to be highly dependent on the development and movement of the tropical systems. Heavy rain should start to focus further offshore over the Coral Sea, though frequent showers/rain and possible thunderstorms could still affect the east tropical and central coasts. Scattered showers and storms should occur over remaining northern districts. The high in the Tasman Sea should move to the southeast of New Zealand, resulting in the ridge along the southern Queensland coast relaxing with only isolated showers expected. Conditions should be fine and mostly sunny over the southern interior.Thursday until SaturdayAt this stage it is most likely there will be an easing in rain and showers about the central and northeast tropical coasts during the outlook period as the tropical system shifts further to the northeast over the Coral Sea. A weak ridge will extend along the east Queensland coast in its wake, with isolated to scattered showers occurring about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. An unstable airmass should persist in the far north of the state, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. A new trough will most likely enter the southern interior of the state on Thursday and shift east, generating some shower and thunderstorm activity with its passage. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Sunday.Product IDQ10700
